As a die-hard skater who’s spent countless nights at Max Fish over the years, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia and excitement when I hear about Vans’ tribute to this iconic institution. The way they’ve recreated the original bar, down to the pool table, Pegasus statue, and even the CD assortment in the jukebox, is nothing short of amazing.
Vans, along with OTW by Vans and PLAYLAB, INC., have created a tribute to the iconic Max Fish skate culture venue in SoHo, New York. This homage recreates the original Max Fish, which opened 35 years ago on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, for the skateboarding, fashion, art, and music communities to enjoy on its grand opening night.
Reflecting on the brand’s “Checkered Past,” OTW by Vans organized 3 days of programming in downtown NYC, including a live musical performance and exclusive product seeding. To kick off NYFW in high spirits, the footwear company revived the skate staple, Max Fish with preserved decor features from the original bar, including the pool table, Pegasus statue, and Julio Iglesias lightbox. A refurbished jukebox has been outfitted with the same CD assortment that soundtracked the original Max Fish.
Stepping into the venue, attendees found themselves greeted by the iconic front of the renowned watering hole. A large graffiti artwork adorned the space, giving it an edgy vibe reminiscent of the authentic Max Fish. The event commenced with a DJ performance by New York-based Las Flaquitas, followed unexpectedly by a live show from TV on the Radio. Throughout the night, traditional late-night snacks such as burgers and popcorn circulated among guests. Upstairs, a DJ booth and pool table were available for enjoyment.
At the celebration event, attendees were given an opportunity to preview the special Old Skool colorway edition of OTW by Vans, which was released in collaboration with Satoshi Nakamoto. This partnership showcases the brand’s knack for breaking traditional boundaries and championing influential partners.
Over a span of three decades, this space has drawn in artists, musicians, and skaters alike, serving as a vibrant gathering spot and cultural center for those in the know downtown. This venue regularly held monthly art exhibitions, showcasing the works of artists such as Tom Otterness, Mark Flood, Mark Gonzales, Neckface, Revolt, and numerous others. Not only did Max Fish host live performances, but it also welcomed acts like Quicksand, The Beatnuts, Elliot Smith, Matt Sweeney, Mya, and many more.
On Saturday, September 7th, Vans is hosting a Block Party in Brooklyn to honor New York’s top skateboarding talents at Skate Space 198. The event features skate jams, lessons, a community market named “Off the Wall,” and an exciting “skate rave.” To secure your spot, sign up here.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always admired how Vans’ New York moments consistently embody their passion for promoting skateboarding as a pivotal element in our culture. Each week brings unique narratives and experiences that resonate deeply within the skateboarding scene, and the fashion and music communities can’t help but be drawn to it. This week, the iconic Vans Old Skool shoes will serve as an emblem of skateboarding, embodying our shared love for this art form and connecting us all.
