‘Velma’ Canceled After Two Seasons on Max

As a longtime fan of the Mystery Inc. gang, I must say I’m feeling a tad melancholic upon hearing that Velma’s solo adventure has come to an end. The animated series, while not directly tied to the original Scooby-Doo lore, managed to breathe fresh air into the franchise with its mature take on the iconic characters. Mindy Kaling’s portrayal of Velma was spot-on, and I couldn’t help but root for her as she navigated the complexities of adolescence while solving mysteries.

Velma Dinkley has solved her last mystery (for now).

Max has ended production of their animated series titled “Velma” following its completion of two seasons. The series’ second installment was released in April, while the October 3rd premiere of a Halloween special serves as its grand finale.

Velma, brought to life by Charlie Grandy (known for The Office and The Mindy Project), represents a mature spin or reinterpretation of the intelligent Scooby-Doo character. In this series, Mindy Kaling, who also serves as an executive producer, lends her voice to Velma. This Velma is grappling with the loss of her mother, navigating adolescent struggles, and unraveling mysteries at the same time.

For the past two gaming sessions, Mindy and Charlie have crafted an engaging and innovative universe within the classic mystery game franchise. Regrettably, we won’t be embarking on another adventure with this series, but I want to express my gratitude for their gripping tales of character development, intriguing puzzles, and side-splitting antics.

Among the talented voice actors gracing the screen in this show are Glenn Howerton (Fred), Constance Wu (Daphne), Sam Richardson (initially as Norville, though later known as Shaggy), alongside Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak, and Karl-Anthony Towns. As a fan, I can’t wait to see these incredible actors bring their characters to life!

Grandy and Kaling co-produced the show named “Velma” alongside Howard Klein, Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, under the leadership of Sam Register as its president.

Several instances of the “Scooby-Doo” series continue to stream on Max, while a real-life adaptation produced by Berlanti Productions is currently being worked on for Netflix.
