As a seasoned festival-goer with years of experiencing the highs and lows of Venice Film Festival under my belt, I must say that this year has been quite the rollercoaster! The first film I attended was Halina Reijn’s “Babygirl,” starring none other than the inimitable Nicole Kidman. A tale of passion, career risks, and family drama, it certainly had its moments. However, what struck me most were the divided reactions from the audience – a testament to the power of art and its ability to evoke diverse emotions.
Some Like it Hot (Some Don’t)
On Friday, it was expected that the movie would revolve around sensuality. However, that’s just what people claim. The film “Babygirl,” directed by Halina Reijn, focuses on a middle-aged, accomplished woman who, despite being married with children, enters into an intense sexual affair with a young intern. This risky behavior jeopardizes her career and family, but somehow things manage to work out in the end. It may not sound particularly unique, but what sets this movie apart is its leading actress – none other than Nicole Kidman, whose athletic physique and fiery red wig hairdo are striking. The film navigates between serious scenes and comedic moments, ultimately reaching its climax. An older man in the audience shouts “Scandal!” as the credits roll. The audience reacts with a mix of applause for the movie and the protester. Opinions among the viewers are divided.
A Pizza for Matteo
Hanging out near the Casino Palace square during the Venice Film Festival, I find myself surrounded by generic sandwiches, Styrofoam desserts, and pre-prepared meals. But amidst all this, there’s a pizzeria that seems like an oasis. Orders are hollered out individually, “Matteo!” rings out, and instantly, eight famished critics dash towards the counter, each vying for their lunch slice. If you don’t want to miss a bite here, it’s probably wise not to share the name Matteo!
Late at night, nearly everyone has left the festival grounds, but an older gentleman dressed in diapers is spotted dashing towards the red carpet. It turns out that Alfonso had managed to escape from a nursing home and was making a beeline for the beach for a swim. The few spectators who remained were taken aback with astonishment.
Some Like it Hot (Some Don’t) — Part 2
In the midst of summer’s heatwave on the Lido, many high-profile celebrities, adorned in fancy gowns or formal tuxedos, find themselves grappling with an uncomfortable predicament. The soaring temperatures, often reaching 92 degrees, make for a less than enjoyable experience. Consequently, several red carpet stars appeared flustered and restless, as if longing for a refreshing cold shower to cool off.
