Venom 3 Beats Best Christmas Pageant Ever and Heretic to Top Box Office

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of the industry, I must say that this fall season has been a rollercoaster ride for us cinephiles. The weekend numbers were indeed disappointing, but they’ve also served as a reminder of the power that lies in resilience and adaptability – qualities that our beloved Venom embodies perfectly.

Regrettably, the theater industry suffered significant losses over the weekend. However, a glimmer of hope emerged as Venom: The Last Dance claimed the top spot at the box office for the third consecutive week. Yet, it’s not all good news; the weekend saw the lowest grossing of the fall movie season, with an estimated domestic total of just $67.2 million (according to The Numbers). Previously, the lowest figure was recorded on the weekend of October 18-20 ($67.8 million), during which Smile 2 held the No. 1 position. Nonetheless, there seems to be a positive aspect: Sony’s symbiote has continued to draw audiences into its sticky income-generating web.

In the box office race, Venom 3 secured the top position by earning $16.2 million, boosting its domestic total to a grand sum of $114.8 million. Meanwhile, international spectators showed immense support for The Last Dance, pushing director Kelly Marcel’s Spidey spin-off to a staggering $279.4 million overseas. With these numbers, Tom Hardy’s final portrayal as the anti-hero in Sony’s trilogy is edging closer to a worldwide gross of $400 million.

During the weekend, two newcomers who made it to the Top 5 didn’t seem to have enough resilience to overtake “Venom 3” for the top spot. Lionsgate’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” which earned $11.1 million, narrowly beat A24’s “Heretic” ($11 million) for second place. “The Wild Robot” came in fourth with $6.7 million, and “Smile 2” finished off the Top 5 with $5 million. While it’s been a bit of a letdown for the fall movie season so far, there are promising movies on the horizon.

Box Office Business Will Boom Soon

Over the weekend, the movie industry didn’t entirely disappoint me, despite the disappointing box office figures hitting a record low. For example, Barry Keoghan’s latest film, “Bird,” showcased an impressive per-theater average ($24,104) during its limited release. Meanwhile, last week’s top-grossing movie continues to dominate the box office, but soon, Venom: The Last Dance will face some stiff competition that could breathe new life into the struggling fall film season – and no, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Red One isn’t going to be our savior. To clarify, The Rock’s collaboration with Chris Evans did rake in a substantial $26 million during its international premiere this weekend.

On November 22nd, two highly anticipated movies – “Gladiator II” and the theater adaptation of the hit Broadway show “Wicked” – will open, aiming to kickstart the Thanksgiving weekend. These two potential blockbusters mark a promising beginning for the struggling movie industry after a lackluster fall season. With Ridley Scott and Denzel Washington’s epic collaboration in the Colosseum-like setting of “Gladiator II” projected to earn $65 million domestically during its opening weekend (according to Deadline), and “Wicked” predicted to captivate audiences to the tune of an $80+ million debut, these films could be the industry’s much-needed ray of hope.

Now, Gladiator II and Wicked’s box office performances will certainly help theaters that are desperate to make money, but these titles’ predicted numbers pale in comparison to what Moana 2 is forecast to post. The highly anticipated sequel, which opens on Nov. 27, could make anywhere between $125 million and $135 million over the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Currently, cinema enthusiasts can only look forward to watching “Venom: The Last Dance”. Also, don’t miss out on the remarkable portrayal of Mr. Reed by Hugh Grant in the critically acclaimed film, “Heretic”. Additionally, starting next week, Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans will join forces as they debut their new movie, “Red One”, which is set to release domestically on November 15th.
