As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of comic book film fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that the impending arrival of Knull in Venom: The Last Dance is nothing short of electrifying. This enigmatic figure, though relatively new to the Marvel Comics scene, has already proven himself to be a formidable adversary, and his potential to shake up Sony’s Spider-Man universe is palpable.
In the upcoming movie “Venom: The Last Dance”, we’ll see the introduction of Knull. However, it appears that this is just the start for this formidable Marvel antagonist. Although Knull is a relatively new character, dating back to 2018, he has quickly grown into one of the most powerful and intimidating adversaries in the Marvel universe. Nicknamed the God of Symbiotes and The King in Black, Knull is an Elder God who invented symbiotes as a tool to expand his power throughout the cosmos. A recent trailer for “Venom: The Last Dance” hints at Knull being a menace in the film, but rumors suggest that he won’t be just a one-time villain.
In an interview with IGN, Venom: The Last Dance director Kelly Marcel hinted at grand plans for the character Knull. She suggested that his appearance in the upcoming Venom movie is merely a start, and it seems that Eddie Brock/Venom won’t directly encounter Knull in the film. Instead, it appears Knull will manipulate the threat from behind the scenes. The character of Knull could potentially serve as a Thanos-like threat for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with his storyline developing gradually over time, similar to the Mad Titan’s tale. Marcel stated:
We’ve reached a point where significant events unfold, and we want to preserve the excitement of discovering the movie’s plot twists for you. However, we understand how crucial Knull is to the fans, so just as we set the stage for Venom, we aim to do the same for Knull. The King in Black is not a character for a brief appearance; this film marks his debut, but only scrapes the surface of his tale. Marvel’s most formidable villains evolve over time. In this story, Knull serves as the ominous force that challenges Eddie and Venom’s alliance to its very core, yet it is their bond that remains the central focus.
In contrast to the claim that “Venom: The Last Dance” marks the final Venom film, it’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the character. Just like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man continued to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after “Iron Man 3,” there’s a chance Tom Hardy’s Venom could follow a similar path as a supporting character. Additionally, there is speculation that the symbiote could bond with a new host, as it does in the comics. Given the success of the Venom movies within Sony’s Spider-Man universe, if they aim to set up Knull as a future adversary, keeping Venom around would be a strategic move.
The King in Black
Ever since Sony Pictures revealed their plans to create movies centered around Spider-Man’s villains and sidekicks, fans have been speculating about the potential crossover or team-up film. The Sinister Six has been a strong contender, but who would they battle? With Spider-Man seemingly unavailable due to his MCU contract with Disney, which seems to prohibit Sony from featuring him in films like Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web, another formidable adversary is needed. Knull could present a grand-scale threat that brings together characters such as Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and her three Spider-Women.
The 2020-2021 Marvel Comics event “King in Black” presents an opportunity for Sony to connect their standalone films. In the comic, Knull leads a symbiote invasion of Earth, with Venom and the Avengers fighting to defend it. By swapping the Avengers with Sony’s Sinister Six, they could bring together all their characters, potentially giving redemption to underperforming ones like Morbius and Madame Web. If “Kraven the Hunter” performs poorly at the box office, Sony might abandon this plan, joining other abandoned cinematic villains like Darkseid and Kang the Conqueror.
