Verdy Accuses 3.1 Phillip Lim Of Copying Girls Don't Cry's Designs

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the virtual world of fashion, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent allegations of design theft between 3.1 Phillip Lim and Verdy’s Girls Don’t Cry label. Having spent years immersing myself in the digital realm where intellectual property is often as precious as rare, high-value loot, I can empathize with both sides of this dispute.

3.1 Phillip Lim marked its 20th anniversary at New York Fashion Week on September 9 with a stunning Spring/Summer 2025 runway show, and as a devoted fan, I was there to witness it! The collection’s joyful themes were generally well-received, but one voice stood out as a bit of a disagreement: Verdy, who felt that a few T-shirt designs seemed too similar to the distinctive wordmarks and semi-bold italic font of his Girls Don’t Cry label.

In 2017, Verdy established Girls Don’t Cry as a touching homage to his spouse. Soon after, its distinctive typography logo gained widespread recognition within the streetwear scene. This was primarily due to the brand’s own promotional efforts and collaborative projects with big names such as Nike SB and Human Made.

Comparing Girls Don’t Cry and 3.1 Phillip Lim designs side by side, it’s noticeable that the fonts share some striking resemblances. The emotional tone conveyed by the messaging on Lim’s designs, notably the “Don’t Cry Tonight” shirt, mirrors that of Girls Don’t Cry as well. Verdy acknowledged the alleged “copies” in a message posted on his Instagram Stories.

Phillip Lim and TheRealPhillipLim appear to have used my designs in their Spring 25 Collection without my permission. This is not a collaboration with me, and I want to clarify this to avoid any confusion among my supporters. If you genuinely support me, kindly leave a comment on their page to let them know that this practice is unacceptable.

I’m deeply upset and frustrated because “Girls Don’t Cry” holds a significant personal meaning for me. Few people know this, but it was initially created as a gift for my wife. I started it when she wasn’t feeling her best to remind her that she is a strong, positive woman.

TO SEE A DESIGNER AT THIS SCALE BE SO UNCREATIVE AND LAZY IS SO DISAPPOINTING.

As I write this, 3.1 Phillip Lim has not yet addressed Verdy’s allegations. However, back in 2018, its founder, Phillip Lim, publicly accused Off-White™ of copying one of his handbag designs. Similarly, in 2017, he criticized both Gucci and Topshop for similar reasons.
