Victor Solomon Unveiled a Curved Mirror Backboard

As a long-time admirer of Victor Solomon‘s work, I’ve always been captivated by his unique blend of basketball and culture. From repairing Kintsugi courts to designing NBA trophies, he truly embodies the spirit of innovation and reinvention.

The intersection of where basketball meets culture has stood as a core pillar to Victor Solomon’s work over the past decade. Amongst his many hoop-inspired interventions, the Boston-born, Los Angeles-based artist repaired an entire court inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, which emphasizes seeing beauty in the broken. On a bigger scale, Solomon was tapped by the NBA to redesign all of its trophies, from the G League to the Larry O’Brien, as well as newer honors, such as the NBA All Star Trophies.

Once again, Solomon graces the court with a striking new piece called “The Portal“. Crafted from gleaming mirror-polished stainless steel, this artwork presents a subtly rough basketball hoop against a flowing, curvaceous backdrop. As one moves around it, their reflection distorts, offering an intriguing perspective on the world. Solomon shared the creation on Instagram, hinting that the game will alter your perception of reality: “the game’ll change how you see the world.”

There seems to be some confusion about whether The Portal is for sale or merely a unique studio creation. For updates on his upcoming editions and the launch of his new “Trophy Talk” series, keep an eye on Solomon’s Instagram account.
