Viola Davis on Fight Scenes in Action Film ‘G20’: “6-Year-Old Viola Would Have Been Squealing”

Viola Davis returns to star in Amazon’s series titled “G20“, portraying President Danielle Sutton, a character tasked with safeguarding her family and global leaders after the G20 summit falls under control of terrorists.

At the LA premiere of the film on Thursday, Davis remarked that the journey to finally release the movie had been quite lengthy, as he’s been involved in its production since 2016.

At the LA premiere on Thursday, Davis mentioned that it took a while to get this movie out after joining its production in 2016.

Standing next to her husband Julius Tennon and creative collaborator, Davis expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that this project was unique for them because it felt like a lighthearted, entertaining film with commercial appeal – something unexpected for audiences to see Davis in, but she believed she could handle. To witness the project come to life is rewarding, as it showcases our creativity and vision.

Moreover, while the movie is filled with action sequences, Davis mentioned that the stunts in this production differed from her preparations for last year’s “The Woman King”. For the latter, she underwent intense training sessions lasting five hours each day, over a period of three months.

The actor described it as “it was more like hand-to-hand combat or rough street fights, even involving weapons. This scenario would have excited a 6-year-old Viola, who would have been delighted by it,” the Air star elaborated. “However, on set, many of these fight scenes were carefully planned out; we had to get creative using whatever objects were at hand, such as kitchen items, to simulate fighting and defeat someone. That was a unique kind of enjoyment.

In the movie, Anthony Anderson, who portrays Davis’ husband, expressed his admiration watching her practice martial arts, saying, “I was amazed by how hard she worked – jujitsu, karate, boxing, and more. She truly gave it her all on set, inspiring us all with her courage, dedication, and enthusiasm. This spirit seeped into every aspect of our work.

Regarding telling this tale about a Black female president from the White House, Anderson stated, “We created a film devoid of politics, yet Viola portrays a powerful African American woman presiding over the world in it. She also leads her family.” Producer Andrew Lazar added that the movie’s concept originated from the fact that there are outstanding women on all sides of the political spectrum who served in the military and were dedicated to their country.

He explained that contrary to expectations, they deliberately steered clear of making a politically-charged film. Instead, they crafted a story revolving around a mother bear who fights to safeguard her kin, ultimately playing a crucial role in saving the world. The movie is about unity within families and the power of coming together. We are incredibly proud of this production. It’s essential that we unite as a global community and as a nation, so the film lacks any divisive elements.

G20 starts streaming April 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
