Hold on to your wallets, folks, because Ethereum’s very own Vitalik Buterin is here to talk about privacy in the age of AI! And no, it’s not just about hiding your crypto stash from your nosy neighbor. This is big.
In a blog post (yes, people actually read those), Vitalik is sounding the alarm about AI bots. They’re getting REALLY good at scraping data. Like, “whoa, I didn’t even know I had that much data” good. And guess what? That means you might need more privacy than ever before.
Now, don’t get too comfortable with your old-school privacy tech. The ‘90s cypherpunks had some nifty ideas, but today we’ve got some real tools in our toolkits. We’re talking zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) and obfuscation tech that make your grandma’s knitting circle look like child’s play.
“Privacy is no longer optional, folks! AI is playing a game of ‘who can collect your data the fastest’ and it’s winning. Soon, we’ll have brain-computer interfaces, and guess what? AI might even read your mind. So much for your secret snack stash!”
“Without privacy, it’s all a game of ‘what will people, bots, and the shadowy figures behind your digital screen think about what I’m doing?’ It’s all fun and games until someone starts peeping into your shopping cart and your late-night TikTok sessions. We’ve got to preserve a little mystery, people!”
But wait, before you start printing out your private keys and running for the hills, Vitalik agrees that some privacy should be limited—like for billionaires who think their yachts are more important than your Netflix password. But he’s concerned about the everyday Joe and Jane losing their privacy entirely. And THAT is the real issue. Oh, and by the way, the future might involve more data collection than a psychic convention.
“The balance between privacy and transparency has always been the bedrock of society… and right now? It’s tipping towards ‘whoops, there goes your data!’ We need privacy tools that are accessible to everyone, not just the tech moguls who can afford to have their own privacy oasis. The most pressing risk? Privacy may just hit rock bottom and guess who gets to snoop? You guessed it: the rich and powerful. And they don’t even need a magnifying glass.”
