On October 14th, Vitalik’s latest blog post highlights Ethereum’s Merge upgrade and its shift towards a proof-of-stake (PoS) network, which he emphasizes has shown impressive stability and performance. However, he points out that there are still substantial hurdles to overcome, especially with regards to transaction finality and making the system more accessible for smaller validators.
For approximately two years now, Ethereum has been operating smoothly as a proof-of-stake system, and it has shown impressive stability, speed, and resilience against centralization issues. Yet, Vitalik Buterin notes that there are still critical aspects where proof-of-stake needs to make advancements.
In his 2023 plan, he divided these problems into two main groups: technical advancements and financial modifications. He’s confident that the technical advancements will be covered during the Merge update, while the financial aspects will be incorporated in the future Scourge update.

Technical Enhancements: The Path Forward
Vitalik Buterin pointed out that one problem at present is the need for two to three periods, or around 15 minutes, to authenticate a block. Furthermore, the stipulation of a minimum deposit of 32 ETH presents an obstacle for numerous prospective validators. These conditions clash with the objectives of encouraging maximum participation from validators, shortening finalization time, and decreasing node burden.
To tackle these problems, Buterin suggested various strategies with the goal of achieving ‘single-slot finality’, which means blocks can be confirmed in just one slot (preferably within 12 seconds). Additionally, he proposed lowering the minimum stake required to validate a block to 1 ETH. This improvement not only provides a smoother user experience but also makes staking more inclusive, making it easier for individual validators to participate.
Proposed Solutions for Single-Slot Finality
Buterin outlined three potential paths for achieving single-slot finality:
- Brute Force Approach: Implement advanced signature aggregation protocols, potentially utilizing zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-SNARKs) to process signatures from millions of validators quickly.
- Orbit Committees: Introduce a new mechanism that allows randomly selected medium-sized committees to finalize the chain while maintaining economic finality. This approach would leverage the existing heterogeneity in validator deposit sizes, ensuring that smaller validators still play a crucial role in the network’s security.
- Two-Tiered Staking: Establish two classes of stakers with different deposit requirements. Only higher-deposit stakers would directly contribute to economic finality, while lower-tier stakers could delegate their stake or provide attestation.
The Need for Secrecy in Block Proposals
One issue Ethereum encounters is the unpredictability of block creators, which can lead to security risks. An attacker could potentially target validators by focusing on their identifiable IP addresses during the process of block creation. However, Vitalik Buterin underlined the significance of incorporating Single Secret Leader Election (SSLE) methods to conceal the identity of the upcoming block creator until the block is actually formed.
Future Directions
In his discussion, Buterin mentioned several research endeavors tackling these problems, such as the “Whisk” protocol and various SSLE proposals.
