Despite this, there’s no shortage of attempts to produce “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” and spinoffs. Initially, Johnny Depp was thought not to return as Jack Sparrow in the sixth main installment, but now it seems plans are underway to possibly bring him back for an upcoming Disney film.
2022 saw executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer stating that Depp wouldn’t be returning to the Pirates film series during Depp’s trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. However, Depp himself had expressed no desire to revisit the Jack Sparrow character, not even for $300 million and a million alpacas. Since then, whispers of Depp potentially returning to the role have circulated. Now, Variety reports that Bruckheimer is crafting two scripts for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, one of which involves Jack Sparrow. But this script can only materialize if Depp and Disney can find common ground. A source hinted that no options are off the table at present.
At present, it’s not definite, but should the given information be correct, Disney is considering inviting Johnny Depp to return for the project. Jerry Bruckheimer would undoubtedly arrange it quickly if he could, expressing earlier this year his desire for Depp to rejoin the film and confirming that they have discussed it. The two have remained friendly, with this update arriving a month after their reunion at Depp’s art exhibition.
By July 2023, there were reports suggesting that Johnny Depp might consider rejoining the Pirates of the Caribbean series. A source close to the matter mentioned that if an appropriate project arises, he’d be willing to participate. In case Depp indeed signs up for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and production begins promptly, it would mark his significant comeback to Hollywood. His recent work has primarily been smaller projects and films produced outside the U.S., such as Minamata and Jeanne du Barry.
If Disney and Johnny Depp can’t reconcile, and Jack Sparrow won’t return to the silver screen, an alternative option could be the second script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, which was penned by Craig Main. Last year, Main expressed doubts that Disney would accept it due to its unusual nature, but the studio found it remarkable instead. Mazin had wanted to collaborate with Ted Elliot, who co-wrote the initial four Pirates films with Terry Rossio, on further refining this script. Additionally, there are whispers that Austin Butler has been considered for a leading role in a new Pirates film.
