For three years now, fans have eagerly anticipated details about Kingdom Hearts 4, following its announcement by Square Enix. However, aside from the enticing trailer showcasing impressive visuals, there’s been no fresh news from creator Tetsuya Nomura or Square Enix on this upcoming game. Given Disney’s usual approach of staying quiet until a significant reveal is imminent for this series, they too have remained silent on the matter.
Fans of the series consistently experience a lingering, familiar sort of pain due to the prolonged wait for Kingdom Hearts 3. It’s evident that enduring such long gaps between installments in this series will be agonizing.
Enthusiasts of the series might recall the considerable wait until they could play the third installment. In fact, it was a full 14 years after the second game was launched on PS2 in 2005 that the third part made its appearance in 2019.
It’s understandable that some Kingdom Hearts fans might feel impatient about the release of the official third game. However, it’s important to remember that prior to this, they were given several other games to play on different platforms such as DS, PSP, 3DS, and even mobile devices. Additionally, there were remastered collections for PS3 and modern consoles. So while the wait might have seemed long, fans actually had numerous Kingdom Hearts releases to keep them entertained in the meantime.
Instead of waiting for Kingdom Hearts 4, fans don’t have as many Kingdom Hearts games to pass the time with compared to their wait. Although they can enjoy other action RPGs from Square Enix like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake featuring Cloud from Kingdom Hearts, these aren’t official sequels in the series.
At approximately the same period when Kingdom Hearts 4 (KH4) was announced, another mobile game titled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was also unveiled. However, since then, it appears that this specific title has vanished from public view. Square Enix and Nomura are diligently working to create a harmonious narrative between these games or, at the very least, deliver top-notch gaming experiences for their loyal fans.

It’s worth pointing out that voicing our dissatisfaction doesn’t equate to demanding Square Enix hasten the production of Kingdom Hearts 4 or Missing-Link. We recognize the immense effort involved in creating games of such caliber, and we appreciate the time required for intricate narratives like these. Crafting another chapter in the story of Sora and his companions is certainly no simple task.
It seems unlikely that Square Enix should have held back on revealing the trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4. The creators aimed to update fans about the ongoing development of this new title, and they did so quite elegantly. However, it’s a pity that there isn’t a temporary game in the series for us to enjoy while we wait for its release.
No, we are not playing that rhythm game. We don’t care how canon it is.
