Wales Bonner Gives Soul to Sartorial Details for FW25

In the heart of a pristine white studio, I’ve unveiled my FW25 collection, infusing it with a tender romanticism and a yearning nostalgia that echoes within. This season, I’ve been meticulous in crafting tailored pieces and intricate embellishments, all while deepening my connection to 20th-century Black style, guided by the artistic wisdom of Chicago’s own Theaster Gates.

Initially capturing interest are the black-and-white portraits, stemming from Gates’ conceptual endeavor, The Black Image Corporation. By incorporating pictures sourced from the Johnson Publishing Company, this assembly pays tribute to numerous ways in which Black women have influenced and molded global culture.

Photos taken by Moneta Sleet Jr. and Isaac Sutton from magazines such as Ebony and Jet are revitalized through overdyed prints and denim jacquard. A captivating cobalt blue shirt is transformed into a canvas for an unending, glamorous image, possibly hinting at a subversive nod to Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe series. Meanwhile, a matching denim jacket and short set showcases a model running her fingers through her hair. In another ensemble consisting of beige workwear pants and a vibrant yellow and brown puffer vest, the iconic glamour shot is prominently displayed on a white t-shirt.

Remarkably, the standout feature of this collection is its range of coats – introducing a unique partnership between the brand and Crombie Ltd., an esteemed English men’s clothing manufacturer. Together, they created a classic grate coat made from navy wool, accentuated with brown leather piping and golden buttons, thanks to their collaboration with Bonner.

In addition, other coats in the collection include a beige Japanese canvas work coat boasting prominent gold lock closures, and an Italian leather flight jacket adorned with fur accents on the collar and cuffs, made from curly long-haired fur.

In this ensemble, soft touches can be seen in vibrant knitwear pieces that resemble jewels, along with a fabric reminiscent of lace, showcased on a white top and coordinating shorts. The color palette includes shades of pink, which are also present on an old-school “Infinite Soul” sports t-shirt and serve as an accent in the latest version of the adidas Originals x Wales Bonner Jewel Mary Jane shoe, styled in gold.
