WandaVision Creator Reveals How Agatha All Along Spinoff Will Deal With Intense Fan Theories

As a seasoned Marvel fan and follower of the MCU’s intricate narrative tapestry, I’ve grown accustomed to navigating the labyrinthine world of fan theories, but it wasn’t always so. When I found myself at the helm of WandaVision, I was a nervous wreck, constantly on edge about whether we were going to meet Mephisto or Reed Richards. The anticipation was palpable and overwhelming, and I must admit, I took it all a little too seriously.

Jac Schaeffer, who previously oversaw the hit TV series “WandaVision” and now contributes her skills to the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production, “Agatha All Along“, has gradually become accustomed to dealing with fan theories. However, when she was managing the MCU’s initial foray into television, they were a significant source of apprehension. The new series brings back Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, starring in her own solo venture. Similar to “WandaVision”, “Agatha All Along” is expected to be full of surprises and unexpected plot twists, keeping viewers guessing. Yet, the anticipation of such plot twists also brings a wave of fan theories along with it.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jac Schaeffer reminisced about her time at Marvel, recalling instances when fan theories used to make her extremely anxious. Before the launch of ‘WandaVision’, fans were in a state of excitement, speculating that Mephisto would be introduced into the MCU for the first time (with Al Pacino rumored to play the character), and that Reed Richards would unexpectedly appear years before the announcement of ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’.

During WandaVision, I took the fan theories quite personally and now feel I’ve grown since then,” she admitted. She learned a crucial lesson from her senior Marvel colleagues who were accustomed to disregarding the excessive fan theories swirling online.

During WandaVision at Marvel, everyone seemed unfazed by fan theories, and it’s become clear to me now that there will always be theories surrounding a project. The key is to focus on doing your best work and trusting the audience will enjoy the ride. Consequently, I find myself less concerned with them compared to before.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can tell you that when discussing our captivating series, Agatha All Along, I’m under a unique double pressure. On one hand, I need to safeguard the show’s thrilling twists and surprising revelations from being spoiled. But there’s another aspect to it – ensuring we don’t magnify insignificant elements beyond proportion, thereby fueling misguided fan theories. In my own words, I strive to maintain a delicate balance between keeping the suspense intact and avoiding unnecessary speculation among our dedicated viewers.

“But, yes, the short answer is there are a handful of things that of course I can’t explain. I have been very careful with the language that I use in order to protect things.”
