WandaVision Creator Weighs In On Scarlet Witch’s Doctor Strange 2 Being So Wildly Different From Her Arc On The Show

As a seasoned Marvel gamer with over a decade of binge-watching and theorizing under my belt, I must say that the transformation of Wanda Maximoff has been nothing short of captivating. From her heartbreaking journey in Westview to her chilling portrayal in Doctor Strange 2, Elizabeth Olsen’s performance has left me spellbound.

For quite some time now, fans have been following the Marvel films sequentially, along with the live-action series available on Disney+. Characters like Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff have become fan favorites over this period, and she certainly falls into that category. Recently, after Olsen discussed her character’s development, the creator of WandaVision shared thoughts about Scarlet Witch’s role in Doctor Strange 2 being significantly distinct from her journey on the show.

In its debut, the series WandaVision was a hit, earning Emmys and captivating audiences, elevating Wanda to a prominent role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Viewers followed as Elizabeth Olsen’s character grappled with her sorrow, ultimately giving up her family to liberate the town of Westview. However, when she reappeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda had become a malevolent killer, leaving fans perplexed. Later, creator Jac Schaeffer addressed this shift in narrative with RadioTimes, discussing her character’s transition.

I adore Wanda, along with every character I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with, such as Natasha in Black Widow and Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel, just to name a few. However, being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe means we share characters and narratives for a while. We get our time with them, then the story continues, which is one of the delightful aspects of working within the MCU. Many of my fellow actors were involved in that production as well.

It appears as though Wanda’s actions in “Doctor Strange 2” might conflict with the ending of “WandaVision,” but Schaeffer seems to be implying that this is a normal part of using characters across various MCU productions. We’ll simply need to observe how her character evolves when she reappears in future Marvel films.

Fervent enthusiasts recall the macguffin employed in “Doctor Strange 2” to depict why Wanda turned so deadly, including the intense Illumanti scene. This macguffin was known as the Darkhold, which gradually corrupted her. Combined with her heart-wrenching longing for her lost children, it led fans to surmise that the Scarlet Witch had been driven to such extremes by sheer desperation and immense power.

In that very interview, I found myself expressing more about my fondness for both Wanda and the remarkable Elizabeth Olsen. Here’s what I had to say:

I’m deeply appreciative for the moments I spent with Wanda and can only wish for further encounters like those to occur. Truly, I yearn for more of Lizzie Olsen in any capacity; she’s simply remarkable.

There appears to be widespread consensus among fans and whispers suggest that a standalone Scarlet Witch film could be on the horizon. With concerns arising over her potential role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe following her apparent demise during the conclusion of Doctor Strange 2, this movie may provide some clarity on her future.

Though Wanda’s destiny remains uncertain, Schaeffer consistently hints at her throughout “Agatha All Along“. Many viewers eagerly anticipate her potential appearance in the series at some point during the season.

Right now, you can stream the journey of Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+. To ensure you don’t miss any upcoming Marvel films as they hit theaters in 2025, keep an eye on their release dates.
