‘Warfare’: First Reactions to Alex Garland’s A24 War Film

Initial responses to Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s movie “Warfare” are popping up on social media, and it seems the general opinion is that this is a powerful, gruesome, and heart-wrenching film that demands to be seen in cinemas.

A narrative of actual events from the 2006 Iraq War, Warfare portrays a fierce battle, and chronicles a group of Navy SEALs who find themselves pinned down in a residence under relentless enemy fire.

Alongside sharing the director’s role for the movie, Mendoza (an Iraq War veteran) was also a co-writer of the script for “Warfare” in collaboration with Garland. The film draws heavily on Mendoza’s personal experiences during the conflict and is a sequel to Garland’s highly anticipated 2024 release, “Civil War.” “Civil War” was A24’s most expensive production to date and ranked second only to their highest-grossing film globally after the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Similar to the gritty and intense film Black Hawk Down (2001), the movie Warfare boasts a large cast of talented up-and-coming actors, including D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.

Warfare is set to hit theaters on April 11.
