Warren Buffett’s Only TV Station Loses ABC Affiliation as Disney Finds New Miami Partner

Warren Buffett, often referred to as the Oracle of Omaha, is ending his partnership with Disney at his regional television station.

On Thursday, Disney announced that WPLG, their south Florida TV station owned by Berkshire Hathaway for the past 11 years, will no longer be an affiliate of ABC starting later this summer. Instead, Disney is collaborating with Sunbeam Television Group to establish a new platform for ABC called “ABC Miami”.

Disney has revealed that WPLG, their TV station in south Florida owned by Berkshire Hathaway for 11 years, will no longer be associated with ABC from this summer onwards. They are teaming up with Sunbeam Television Group to create a new home for ABC called “ABC Miami”.

Disney has announced that ABC programming will run on WPLG until August 4th, after which it will shift to ABC Miami on channel 7.2. According to reports, the contract for the affiliation agreement expired at the end of last year, and despite ongoing negotiations, the two parties could not reach an agreement.

In a staff meeting held on Thursday, WPLG CEO and president E.R. Bert Medina shared that many television stations nationwide have carried out large-scale layoffs in recent times. Fortunately, WPLG has managed to avoid such cuts. However, it became evident that if we agreed to the deal proposed by ABC, we would’ve had no choice but to let go of our employees to meet the high financial demands that the network was imposing on us.

Medina said that WPLG will instead double down on local programming.

Disney is pleased to announce that it has secured a new business alliance with Sunbeam, a company that manages WSVN-TV in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Florida, along with WHDH-TV and WLVI-TV in Boston, Massachusetts.

Disney Entertainment is thrilled about teaming up with Sunbeam Television in South Florida. We find that they align with Disney’s longstanding dedication to serving local communities and appreciate ABC’s respected brand as well as the substantial enhancements we’re making to our top-tier network content. We would like to express our gratitude towards Berkshire Hathaway Media and everyone at WPLG Local 10 for their collaboration. Over the years, it has been a source of pride for us to deliver captivating programming to our cherished viewers together.

When the chance arose to collaborate with ABC, we recognized that by pooling our resources, we could form an incredibly powerful alliance,” said Paul Magnes, co-president of Sunbeam Television Corporation. “Sunbeam Television Corporation is well-known for its competitive broadcasting prowess. Including ABC programming in our lineup will undeniably bolster our presence. Being a family-run business deeply rooted in this community for close to 70 years, we’ve always prioritized local news and contributed to various non-profit organizations throughout South Florida.

The termination of the partnership contract signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter for WPLG, which has served as Miami and southern Florida’s ABC affiliate on channel 10 for many years. The station boasts a rich and intricate past, having been owned by The Washington Post and the Graham family for much of its tenure. Following the Grahams’ sale of The Post to Jeff Bezos of Amazon, their non-Post properties were consolidated into a new corporation. Later on, in 2014, WPLG was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway, which is owned by Warren Buffett.
