- The Sophomore Slump Hurt ‘House of the Dragon’
- Do the Golden Globes Matter for ‘House of the Dragon?’
As a devoted fan who has invested countless hours into the world of Westeros, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment with this year’s Golden Globe nominations for House of the Dragon. The series, which had been riding high on the success of its impressive first season, seems to have taken a hit with the sophomore slump and it shows in the nominations (or lack thereof).
Fans of Westeros have had a tough week with some disappointing news. First, George R.R. Martin seems to have confirmed fears that the last two books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series may never be completed. But things took an unexpected turn during the Golden Globe nominations when House of the Dragon, which had already made a strong impact two years ago, stole the show. Despite receiving mixed reviews for its second season, Westeros-based shows have always received industry backing. Even the final season of Game of Thrones, despite being criticized at the time, managed to break records with Emmy nominations and won Best Drama Series.
Rather than receiving numerous Golden Globe nominations for its second season, House of the Dragon garnered only one nod: Best Drama Actress for Emma D’Arcy. This is the lowest number of nominations in the franchise at the Golden Globes since Game of Thrones’ final season, which also earned a single nomination. Going back to 2013-14, the second and third seasons (often considered the series’ peak) were overlooked entirely. The majority of this year’s nominees, including The Diplomat, The Day of the Jackal, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, Shōgun, and Squid Game, have less viewership and cultural impact compared to House of the Dragon. So, one might wonder, what led to this outcome?
The Sophomore Slump Hurt ‘House of the Dragon’
Initially, let’s address the elephant in the room – the second season of House of the Dragon didn’t quite measure up to its predecessor. Despite some remarkable scenes, including what might be the show’s finest episode thus far, the overall performance fell short. The narrative surrounding Daemon seemed stuck in a rut at Harrenhal, and while the tension in the Targaryen Civil War felt like it was reaching a boiling point, the season finale turned out to be less dramatic than expected.
So far, each season in both “Game of Thrones” and its spinoff has led to a significant point that left viewers excited about what would happen next. However, the second season of “House of the Dragon” didn’t seem to be leading towards anything specific, other than prolonging the show for its goal of four seasons when it seemed there wasn’t enough story to maintain that length. This lack of a clear build-up made it feel insignificant, and the absence of a compelling hook for the third season might explain why the show’s excitement has waned in recent months.
Do the Golden Globes Matter for ‘House of the Dragon?’
To put it simply, House of the Dragon wasn’t the only notable oversight by HBO at this year’s Golden Globes. Shows like the esteemed Curb Your Enthusiasm and Industry, which had an exceptional season, also didn’t receive any nominations. It’s possible that the Golden Globes are less likely to favor certain shows compared to the Emmys, and they often help new shows gain attention. For instance, half of the Drama Series nominees were first-time nominees this year.
It’s worth pointing out that one awards ceremony doesn’t automatically reflect industry backing for House of the Dragon. As we’ve seen, Game of Thrones often faced unexpected snubs from the Golden Globes, despite its dominance in the Drama categories at the Emmys. Even harsh criticism leveled at its final season couldn’t prevent it from making history with the Golden Globes, albeit in a negative manner. Given this past, it’s premature to predict House of the Dragon‘s awards journey. However, it’s hard not to feel that the recent Golden Globe snub may have made Game of Thrones infamous in some way. By the way, both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are available for streaming on Max.
