As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I can confidently say that I have never shared such an unusual, yet amusing, connection with any other character from the beloved series. Samantha Clinch’s account of Michael Gambon’s impromptu spitting incident during the making of The Goblet of Fire has undeniably become one of my favorite anecdotes from behind-the-scenes.
A helpful guideline for daily interactions is to speak clearly, not to splatter saliva. It’s generally understood that we should avoid such actions during a casual chat, and most of us manage to do so effectively. However, there are occasional instances where someone might overdo it, even when they’re playing a part. I’m not referring to the time when Jonathan Groff was acting as King George III in Hamilton. Instead, I’m talking about an instance from some of the Harry Potter films where an actress revealed that Michael Gambon accidentally sprayed saliva into her face while he was playing Albus Dumbledore during the filming of The Goblet of Fire.
Samantha Clinch, known for her unaccredited roles as Eloise Midgen in “The Prisoner of Azkaban” and “The Goblet of Fire,” recently posted on TikTok that during the filming of the latter movie, a particularly memorable experience in her career, there were some unexpectedly chaotic moments while she was acting alongside Michael Gambon. In her video, she fondly recalled:
In Harry Potter’s Goblet of Fire, a chilling moment occurs when Dumbledore informs everyone that the Dementors are approaching. This news is undeniably dreadful for all involved. However, given Dumbledore’s character, there’s a heavy burden on him due to the gravity of the situation. As he approaches my table and gently touches my shoulder, he looks me straight in the eye and declares, “The Dementors are here!” His excitement was so intense that it seemed like he was about to drool, covering the area around us with saliva, some of which might have even gotten into my eye.
In an actor’s career, there are numerous accolades they might earn, but it’s unlikely any could claim sharing a unique experience with Samantha Clinch – receiving a spit from the Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe-nominated Michael Gambon on set. If you’re thinking of watching The Goblet of Fire on your Max subscription to catch this scene, it’s not included in the film. Clinch herself confirmed that this scene was cut from the movie.
In the book, not the movie, there’s a scene where Dumbledore apparently spit at me, which is quite unusual. It seems odd to me that this scene was left out, as it would have been intriguing to watch. So, I can only imagine that Dumbledore must have had a few too many butterbeers and spat in my direction during one of our encounters. An unforgettable moment, definitely a career highlight!
As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I’m thrilled that the actress handled the situation gracefully and now cherishes those memories, even though it’s a bummer that scene didn’t make it to the final cut of The Goblet of Fire. Still, it adds an exciting twist to the tales I share at gatherings and online!
Currently, there’s no news about further movies in the Harry Potter film series. However, an upcoming television show based on the original books is being developed. This show will be broadcast on both HBO and Max. Keep checking TopMob for more information on its development.
