As a dedicated fan who has witnessed the illustrious career of Tom Cruise unfold over the years, it is truly fascinating to delve into the intricacies of his experiences on set. The tale of his time spent filming “The Color of Money” with the legendary Paul Newman serves as an invaluable lesson for aspiring actors everywhere – and it’s a story that never fails to amuse me!
In the very same year, Tom Cruise graced the screen in the original Top Gun, he also shared screen time with the legendary Paul Newman in Martin Scorsese’s underestimated masterpiece, The Color of Money. This film about hustlers at pool tables would eventually earn Paul Newman a well-deserved Oscar, but it also served as an enlightening experience for Tom Cruise, who had the opportunity to learn valuable lessons directly from the master.
A clip from The Graham Norton Show a few years ago recently went viral on YouTube which includes Cruise recounting some of his time spent shooting The Color of Money. The problem came when Cruise decided on his wardrobe for a particular scene when it was much warmer than it would be when the scene was actually shot. Cruise explained…
In Chicago, we’re filming The Color of Money… I was on location during the summer and tried on my outfits, thinking ‘I’ll wear a leather jacket with a t-shirt, slicked-back hair – they promise wind speeds up to 90 miles per hour. But there I was in January, shooting this scene… let me tell you, it was so cold I could barely talk!
Being a devotee of “The Color of Money,” a follow-up film produced decades later than the classic “The Hustler” from 1961, I am quite familiar with the scene in question. In this scene, Vincent, portrayed by Tom Cruise, and Eddie Felson, one of Paul Newman’s most memorable roles, have had a disagreement. It is winter in Chicago, and it’s nighttime when we find Vincent walking the streets. Eddie attempts to persuade Vincent to cool down and get into the car as he drives alongside.
In that particular scene, I hadn’t given much thought to how chilly it must have been for Tom Cruise during filming, considering the snow covering the ground clearly indicated it was freezing. However, it turned out that between takes, Cruise needed to stand close to heaters to keep warm. Interestingly, Cruise discovered he was the one feeling the cold in the shot, as Newman was actually quite comfortable. Despite this, Cruise persevered…
In this scenario, he’s seated in the car while I’m beside him. I peer inside, surprised. ‘What?’ I exclaim, for he was donned in a warm coat, with the car’s heater blazing. He seemed to revel in the joy of driving his vehicle, equipped with an electric heater and a warm coat, while I wore just a t-shirt. His gaze fell on me, and he teased, ‘T-shirt.’ He then commented on my wardrobe choice during summer, to which I admitted guilt. His response was, ‘Watch and learn, kid. Watch and learn.’ That moment, I never forgot it.
Paul Newman was undeniably one of the best in the industry. His Hollywood journey was something that many aspire to, and it’s evident he picked up a few valuable lessons during his time there. Just like Cruise, who now carefully considers not only where but also when his films will be shot to ensure he’s well-prepared for the weather. It seems Cruise has taken on the role of mentor for many upcoming actors these days. Whether any of them have made wardrobe choices that didn’t quite match the season remains unspoken.
