Following the massive success of “Smile” in 2022 as it raked in $217 million at the box office and became the year’s top-grossing horror movie, a sequel was only natural. In March 2023, production on “Smile 2” was officially confirmed. The film is scheduled for release next month, providing us with another glimpse due to a fresh trailer that dropped today, showcasing Drew Barrymore’s return to the horror genre – however, her role in this sequel may surprise you.
“Rising star Skye Riley encounters a string of unsettling and intimidating occurrences, just before embarking on a global tour. As she grapples with these events, she must confront the shadows from her past to reclaim her life and prevent it from unraveling further.”
Can Smile 2 Replicate the Success of the First Movie?
In 2022, the film “Smile” was launched with several appealing factors, including its unique concept that transforms a simple happy expression into something sinister and evil. Produced by Paramount Pictures on a budget of $17 million, “Smile” aimed to stand out through an inventive marketing strategy where actors sported terrifying grins at Major League Baseball games. This unconventional tactic undoubtedly stirred up a great deal of excitement for the movie, playing a significant role in its box office success.
Despite an online buzz earlier this year about “Smile 2”, it doesn’t appear to be garnering as much excitement as the original. This doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t be financially successful, but given its release in 2022, which offered a refreshing change in a genre often filled with reboots and remakes, the team behind “Smile” will need to deliver something extraordinary for the sequel to meet audience expectations. With the storyline no longer novel, the director’s second attempt needs to impress fans significantly, as suggested by the new trailer.
