Watch House of the Dragon's Matt Smith Gave Jimmy Fallon a Lesson in High Valyrian

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Westeros and its complex political intrigues, it’s safe to say that Matt Smith’s appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show was a highlight of my week. The way he effortlessly switched between English and High Valyrian was nothing short of mesmerizing, and his charm and humor only added to the experience.

Turns out Jimmy Fallon has a knack for learning Westeros languages.

Matt Smith from “House of the Dragon” visited “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” on September 16, 2022, to discuss the initial season of the Game of Thrones prequel series. During this chat, he also taught Jimmy Fallon some basic High Valyrian phrases.

As a gamer enthusiastically discussing a mind-blowing battle sequence with no dialogue from Smith on the latest episode of Game Realms, I couldn’t help but wonder about his mastery of High Valyrian – the language he effortlessly uses in the hit HBO series. Intrigued by this, I boldly asked him if it was true, and to my awe, he started reciting a few lines in Valyrian right there! Needless to say, both the host and the audience were left speechless by his linguistic prowess.

Jokingly, Fallon suggested playing the track in reverse, implying it would spell out “Paul is dead,” referencing the well-known Beatles conspiracy theory.

Smith clarified that it means, “‘Jimmy, your eyes are marvelous,'” as he taught Fallon a bit of High Valyrian, which Fallon seemed to grasp quite easily.

The actor, clearly pleased, responded, “You’ve made a great beginning.” He went on to deliver some additional lines, which Fallon echoed. Eventually, he inquired, “What was it that you just said to me?” (or simply, “What did you just tell me?”)

Smith shared, on a certain day, I’ll claim this throne as my own, he stated, though he made it clear to Fallon that his ambitions lie elsewhere, specifically away from the late-night hosting role.

Smith, well-known for his role as the eleventh Doctor Who, admitted he wouldn’t excel at your task because, in his words, “even though I might mess it up, I have to say, I couldn’t do it; I would be awful at it.”

“You could do anything you want, you have your own dragon!” said Fallon.

Could it be possible that, given his proficiency in High Valyrian, Fallon might appear as a guest star in House of the Dragon’s Season 3?

Matt Smith thinks Daemon Targaryen would win in a fight against Jon Snow

On June 4, 2024, when Smith graced the stage once more on The Tonight Show, Fallon posed an intriguing question to him that had been stirring discussions online: Who do you think would emerge victorious in a hypothetical clash between Daemon Targaryen and Jon Snow, portrayed by Kit Harington?

“Come on, man. Jimmy… Mate, I’ve got a dragon. I’ve got a dragon,” Smith joked.

As a long-time fan of the Game of Thrones series, I must confess that Jon Snow has always been one of my favorite characters. However, let me clarify, he’s not exactly your typical hero. In fact, he’s got a mysterious aura about him that keeps me hooked.

Hard to argue with!
