As a long-time fan of musical theater and particularly of Stephen Schwartz’s masterpiece, “Wicked“, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming film adaptation. Having grown up with the original Broadway production, it holds a special place in my heart and memories. The casting of Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba is nothing short of brilliant, and their powerful rendition of “Defying Gravity” in this trailer has left me spellbound.
Universal has unveiled a fresh, extended trailer for the upcoming movie version of Wicked, which is based on Stephen Schwartz’s acclaimed Broadway musical. Directed by Jon M. Chu, famous for Crazy Rich Asians, this film will be divided into two parts. The initial segment serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. In this tale, Ariana Grande portrays Glinda, the Good Witch of the West, who recounts the previously untold events surrounding her friendship with Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, played by Cynthia Erivo.
The trailer starts off with Glinda breaking the news about the Wicked Witch of the West’s demise to the folks of Oz, seeming to continue from where The Wizard of Oz concluded. As the narrative unfolds, she shares the events leading up to the well-known story through a sequence of flashbacks. Over a duration of approximately two and a half minutes, viewers are treated to a musical number, “Defying Gravity,” sung by Grande and Erivo in a grand, cinematic version that echoes the song’s iconic melody.
This upcoming holiday season will see the theater debut of the first installment of “Wicked”, beginning on November 22. The sequel of this movie is planned for release a year later, specifically on November 26, 2025.
