‘Watchmen: Chapter 2’ Ending, Explained: Is This a New Beginning?

As someone who’s spent countless hours poring over comic books and their cinematic adaptations, I must say that Watchmen Chapter II is a masterpiece of storytelling. It’s not often that a sequel manages to live up to its predecessor, but this one does so with such grace and finesse that it leaves me in awe.

Initially, the groundbreaking graphic novel “Watchmen” was released in monthly installments from 1986 to 1987, later compiled into a complete edition in 1987. The creation of this comic masterpiece was a collaboration between renowned author Alan Moore and talented illustrator Dave Gibbons, with DC Comics serving as its publisher. Over the years since then, “Watchmen” has undergone significant adaptations on three major occasions – firstly, a live-action film directed by Zack Snyder in 2009, secondly, an HBO miniseries set within the comic’s universe in 2019, and more recently, an animated two-part production released this year.

In a new twist, this latest version has been masterfully directed by Brandon Vietti and produced by Warner Brothers. While there have been previous adaptations and more are likely to come, this one stands out as the most authentic representation of the graphic novel, bringing it vividly to life and being the closest adaptation yet to the original work.

What Is ‘Watchmen’ About?

In this fictional world, vigilantes were once a common and acceptable aspect of society, functioning almost as an additional form of law enforcement. Known as “Masks,” they were viewed as an extra means of maintaining order, serving as a backup during times of war, civil unrest, or conflict. As the story unfolds, it’s set in a time when most Masks have been outlawed, leaving only a select few government-contracted vigilantes to carry on their work.

Throughout the cosmos, numerous enigmatic teams donning masks have emerged since their origin, yet none compare to the captivating narrative that unfolds around the reformed squad previously recognized as The Watchmen. As an ardent admirer, I’d like to share my perspective:

After that point, the narrative delves into Rorschach’s detective work and the complex chain of events leading to The Comedian’s demise, which ultimately prompts John to depart Earth in pursuit of a more coherent reality for himself. Scattered throughout are recollections from the genesis of authorized vigilantes, revealing how each character arrived at their current positions within the story, set in the year 1985. As the intricate maze of conspiracies and power struggles is gradually untangled, viewers find themselves immersed in the unfolding drama.

Who Killed the Comedian, and Why?

In summary, the character we know as Ozymandias, or Adrian Veidt, is portrayed as the world’s most intelligent individual. Towards the end of Chapter II, he finds himself facing off with Dan, also known as Night Owl, and Rorschach, regarding why he would murder The Comedian and manipulate events surrounding John, who goes by Dr. Manhattan. Essentially, both characters posed a significant risk to a much vaster and more concerning scheme: The Comedian had knowledge that could disrupt the plan, while Dr. Manhattan was seen as the only one with the power to thwart Adrian’s designs, given his omniscience abilities.

In a chilling, sinister manner reminiscent of a classic villain, Adrian outlines his plan to Night Owl and Rorschach. He reveals the events that led to this point and the motivations behind them. With a team of artists and scientists, he has successfully created a monstrous being and deciphered the secret of teleportation. His ultimate intention is to transport this monster into New York City, unleashing chaos, terror, and mass panic.

Adrian posits that the prospect of nuclear war and mutual destruction among humans is unavoidable – however, providing them with a shared adversary to combat could ultimately forge unity among them. Rather than engaging in internal conflicts, humanity would be compelled to band together to face an alleged alien invasion, resulting in a harmonious society where the risk of war or territorial disputes ceases to exist. In his closing remarks, he drops a bombshell – his scheme is already underway.

Despite Night Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, and Laurie joining forces to confront Ozymandias, their efforts are futile since he’s already wreaked havoc in New York, resulting in billions of deaths. They can neither reveal Adrian’s actions as it would undo the peace for which so many died, and Adrian points out that such disclosure would render their sacrifices meaningless. Nor can they eliminate him because doing so might trigger an investigation that could unveil the truth, ultimately returning them to Adrian’s utopia predicament.

How Does Chapter II End?

To maintain Adrian’s confidentiality and avoid the turmoil that disclosure would bring, all of the Watchmen concur. Except for Rorschach, who views the world in stark contrasts, devoid of nuances, and believes truth should never be hidden. He can’t condone deception or backing a cover-up for any reason, regardless of the potential repercussions. In the name of what they perceive as the greater good, Dr. Manhattan takes Rorschach’s life to safeguard the secret and the coverup.

In the meantime, Adrian’s vision of an ideal society persists, as long as secrets continue to be kept hidden. Meanwhile, Dr. Manhattan, losing all curiosity towards human lives and events, departs from the galaxy in search of fresh universes and life forms. Simultaneously, Dan and Laurie opt for new personas – becoming Sam and Sandra, a typical married couple. Laurie finds peace with her mother following the revelation that The Comedian was her father, and reconciling with all the decisions her mom made to safeguard her. Lastly, Adrian is left grappling with the consequences of his actions, pondering if they were truly justified.

What Does the End Mean?

As Dr. Manhattan is about to depart, Adrian queries him if his actions were justified. If the end justifies the means. However, Dr. Manhattan fails to provide a reassuring response for Adrian, as he can’t give him what he desires to hear. Throughout the movie, viewers have witnessed The Watchmen carrying out some extremely brutal and violent deeds – occasionally for what they perceived as righteous purposes, other times merely because they had the power to do so. In the film’s conclusion, a fragile tranquility prevails on earth – there is no longer any impending threat of nuclear war, nor the specter of death looming over the survivors of Adrian’s scheme.

At the conclusion of the film, there’s an air of fresh beginnings and the possibility of improvement. Dr. Manhattan departed from the human realm, opting for creation over destruction, while Dan and Laurie plan to continue their lives as masked individuals but not entirely abandon them. However, the question of whether the path that led to this point was justified remains a matter of individual perspective.

In a poignant moment shared between Dr. Manhattan and Adrian prior to his departure from Earth, Dr. Manhattan says, “Everything continues; nothing ever truly ends.” This could imply that there’s more to come. Perhaps this is just the start of something new. Stream now on Apple TV or Prime Video.
