‘Watchmen’ Writer Alan Moore’s ‘The Great When’ Sets TV Adaptation

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for unique storytelling and a deep respect for the authors behind my favorite works, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation tinged with caution regarding Alan Moore’s upcoming TV adaptation of “The Great When.

Known author, Alan Moore, has often expressed disapproval towards adaptations of his works, but he has now endorsed a new TV series based on his latest fantasy novel. Notably, Moore is the creator behind works such as “Watchmen”, “V for Vendetta”, “Batman: The Killing Joke”, “Swamp Thing”, and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”. While fans appreciate Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” and James McTeigue’s “V for Vendetta”, Moore personally dislikes these adaptations.

Regarding the deadline, it’s evident that Alan Moore expresses genuine excitement and enthusiasm about the impending TV interpretation of “The Great When”. To put it simply, he has never been this eager about one of his works, a piece he owns and feels could excel in a different format – television. As the novel was released on October 1st, the production company, Playground, has already acquired the rights to transform this fantasy narrative into a TV series. The project is currently in its infancy, as Playground is actively seeking writers for its development.

The Great ‘When’ ” is the first installment in a series of five epic fantasy novels penned by Alan Moore. This story unfolds amidst World War II London, where a young lad, Dennis Knuckleyard, stumbles upon a book that defies existence. The book was authored in the mystical counterpart to London, and Dennis finds himself compelled to embark on a perilous journey to return the book. David Stern, co-manager of Playground, shares his enthusiasm for bringing this novel to life, commenting:

Alan Moore’s ‘The Great When‘ is a remarkable piece of creative writing, blending aspects of history, fantasy, and enigma to construct a universe that is grandiose yet intimately familiar, bizarre yet distinctly human.

‘The Great When’ Could Be the Next Big Fantasy Series

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that though Alan Moore has penned just one of the five planned novels, the rights for the entire series have been procured by Playground. According to recent reports, their intention is to transform this series into a grand, multi-season event, akin to a cinematic tentpole. Though Moore might still be working on the remaining four novels, it seems that the path forward is already charted out for us enthusiasts to eagerly anticipate.

The playground, well-known for its British historical dramas such as ‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘King Lear’, is now venturing into the realm of fantasy with ‘The Great When’. This is a departure from earlier Alan Moore adaptations which were under the supervision of DC Comics. However, this new production has the full endorsement of the author himself. As Moore puts it, “In Playground, I’ve found individuals who appreciate both me and my story, and are open to my ideas. Given Playground’s reputation, I am confident that this will not disappoint. After much deliberation, I believe I’m finally ready for my moment in the spotlight.

The Great When might be the first adaptation that Alan Moore has genuinely appreciated. Despite often expressing his disappointment with previous adaptations, Moore himself put it succinctly when he said: “I not only didn’t approve of the attempts to adapt my work for a medium they weren’t designed for, I haven’t watched any of these films and consider them all with little respect.
