The “Scary Movie” film series, initially introduced in 2000, will once again grace movie screens following a 13-year absence since the release of “Scary Movie 5.” This collection of spoof movies poked fun at popular horror films during their time, becoming a beloved staple in cinemas throughout the 2000s. The five movies collectively earned $896 million at the box office. Now, after more than a decade, the franchise is set to return with its original creators to offer a new generation of horror fans a comical take on the genre.
It’s been announced that the reboot of “Scary Movie” is set to hit cinemas on June 12, 2026, as confirmed by Marlon Wayans via Instagram. Marlon will be collaborating with his brothers Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans for the first time since their 2009 project “Dance Flick”. Additionally, Rick Alvarez, known for his work on “Fifty Shades of Black” and “A Haunted House”, is also contributing to the script. The movie will be distributed by Paramount Pictures through their partnership with producer Miramax, marking the first film not produced by Dimension Films, which ceased operations in 2019.
The upcoming remake of “Scary Movie,” scheduled for release in June 2026, finds itself amidst an increasingly congested summer lineup. It’s slated to debut a week after Amazon MGM’s ambitious venture with “Masters of the Universe” and a week before the much-anticipated “Toy Story 5.” Interestingly, another film by The Daniels, the award-winning directors of “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” will also premiere on the same day. In this competitive summer season that also features “Avengers: Doomsday,” “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” the live-action “Moana,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” and another Tom Holland “Spider-Man” movie, “Scary Movie” will need to make a significant impact to stand out in this densely populated release period.
‘Scary Movie’s Long Awaited Return
As I eagerly await the arrival of the reboot for “Scary Movie” in theaters, it’s fascinating to consider how much the horror genre has evolved since the last installment graced our screens back in April 2013. The release of “Scary Movie 5” preceded the cinematic revolution that was “The Conjuring,” which not only ignited a renewed fascination with paranormal horror but also sparked a shared universe. Over this time, a myriad of new sub-genres have arisen within the horror realm.
In the spirit of maintaining the comedic legacy of the franchise, it seems that “Scary Movie” will delight in poking fun at the trends that have emerged among contemporary horror films produced by A24, such as “X,” “Hereditary,” and “Talk To Me.” Moreover, prestigious Oscar-winning and nominated horror movies like “Get Out” and “The Substance” appear to be ripe for the spoofing treatment by none other than the Wayans Brothers.
It’s clear that the comedy film “Scary Movie” often takes aim at horror movies, particularly the perplexing trend of giving sequels the same name as the original. For instance, the 2018 release known as “Halloween” is a continuation of the 1978 “Halloween,” and the fifth “Scream” film wasn’t labeled “Scream 5” but rather similarly to the 1996 original. This could be why the upcoming movie isn’t called “Scary Movie 6.” Since “Scary Movie” initially spoofed the “Scream” franchise, it’s fitting that, with Ghostface making a comeback, the classic horror villain might appear in “Scary Movie” as well. The most clever wink would be to cast Melissa Barrera, who was let go from “Scream 7,” in “Scary Movie.
