Wayne Northrup Dies, ‘Days of Our Lives’ Star Was 77

As a lifelong aficionado of daytime dramas, I find myself deeply saddened by the recent passing of yet another legendary actor from the hallowed halls of “Days of Our Lives.” Wayne Northrup, a man whose portrayal of Roman Brady and Dr. Alex North etched his name in the annals of soap opera history, has left us too soon.

This year has been particularly tough for enthusiasts of “Days of Our Lives” and classic character actors in particular. On Friday, November 29th, 2024, Wayne Northrup – a long-standing actor from the show – passed away, making him the third such actor to do so this year. After battling Alzheimer’s for six years, his wife and fellow actress, Lynn Herring Northrop, shared the news with the media in a statement.

“He breathed his final breath surrounded by his beloved family members. We extend our deepest gratitude to The Motion Picture and Television Home, an extraordinarily compassionate and exceptional facility, for their exceptional care during his time there. Wayne’s humor and quick wit brought joy to countless individuals. He was a devoted husband for 43 years, the best father one could ask for to Hank and Grady, and a rancher who cherished his cows and maintained close friendships with many.

Wayne Northrup appeared in a grand total of 1,036 episodes on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” earning fame for his portrayal of the tough Detective Roman Brady, reprising the role later as Dr. Alex North. Additionally, he left an impression on fans of “Dynasty” with his 35-episode stint as chauffeur Michael Colhane during the first and seventh seasons. His character Rex Stanton in “Port Charles” was particularly noteworthy, featuring in 121 episodes. According to Deadline, Northrup is survived by his wife, sons Hank (and wife Laura), and stepmother Janet Northrop.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Mourns the Loss of Its Classic Actors

We previously noted that Northrup joins the list of three notable actors from “Days of Our Lives” who have passed away in 2024. Not long ago, Drake Hogestyn, aged 70, succumbed on Sept. 28, a day before his birthday. Known for playing John Black in the series, Hogestyn appeared in an impressive 4,200 episodes of the show. At the time of his passing, the Hogestyn family released a statement through their official “Days of Our Lives” social media channel.

Ultimately, Bill Hayes, well-known for portraying Doug Williams in Days of Our Lives for an impressive 2,147 episodes, passed away on January 12, 2024. His final appearance was made posthumously on July 11, 2024. In a touching instance of life mirroring art, Hayes met his wife, Susan Seaforth, on the show, and they tied the knot off-screen, just as their characters did. Susan Seaforth Hayes has been a near-constant presence in almost 3,000 episodes of the series.

The long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives” has been renewed for another season, marking its 61st run. On a significant date, Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, it will air its 15,000th episode. You can catch it streaming on Peacock here. As hinted in their Instagram post, the landmark episode is expected to tackle several heartbreaking departures.
