NBC is infusing an element of intrigue into its 2025 Sunday night lineup with the unveiling of the new series Grosse Point Garden Society. Led by Melissa Fumero, Aja Naomi King, Ben Rappaport, AnnaSophia Robb, and others, this show revolves around a suburban gardening club that hides secrets beneath its greenery. Prior to its premiere on NBC and streaming via Peacock subscription, executive producer Casey Kyber shared insights with TopMob about the factors that make the show unique. A significant part of the appeal lies in the impressive ensemble cast.
If you found my “roots” joke a bit over your head, it might be because I got an early peek at the show before its NBC debut on Sunday, February 23, at 10 p.m. ET. The series is full of punny plant references, and I’ve been eager to dive in since chatting with Executive Producer Casey Kyber at SCAD TVfest in Atlanta. She really captured the show’s tone during our conversation, which she shared with me.
This production certainly embodies a unique combination of elements. It’s genuine and moving, it carries an emotional weight, and yet it resonates deeply with audiences. There’s a touch of black comedy that adds depth, and at its core lies a captivating murder mystery. What makes it truly remarkable is this blend, which seems to be the forte of the co-creators, Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, who previously worked on Good Girls. So, we’re eager to explore more of this style, as it mirrors the complexities of real life, where humor often emerges amidst adversity.
If you enjoyed NBC’s series ‘Good Girls’, even if you have mixed feelings about Annie’s series finale outcome, the creators of the suburban crime comedy-drama featuring Christina Hendricks, Retta, and Mae Whitman are introducing another show called ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society‘ to primetime. (If you fancy a rewatch, ‘Good Girls’ is currently streaming on Netflix.)
The trailer for the show titled GPGS appears to emphasize its blend of witty humor and enigmatic mystery, as the primary garden club members find themselves entangled in a murder case that’s laced with scandal and mischief. While their part of suburbia seems idyllic at first glance, it seems their personal relationships are far from perfect. To add to the amusement, actress Melissa Fumero, known for her roles in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Night Court, will be taking on a leading role!
Besides Fumero, there are other humor highlights in the new show that caught my attention. Before the NBC premiere, I won’t reveal any spoilers, but I can assure you that the relationships within the series – both established and fresh – played a significant role in making me hooked on Grosse Pointe Garden Society. The executive producer’s remarks about the cast’s camaraderie now make perfect sense to me as I reflect back. Casey Kyber stated:
We aimed to discover actors who not only displayed outstanding talent but also shared an exceptional bond with each other. I believe we struck gold with our chosen cast. They are incredibly gifted and genuinely kind individuals. From the very beginning, they seemed like real-life friends, sharing meals on their first night together and quickly bonding. This camaraderie translates beautifully on screen. Furthermore, we wanted to depict a diverse range of characters from various backgrounds for our suburban American show. Each actor brings a unique perspective to the roles they play, although it’s important to note that their performances do not necessarily mirror their true lives [laughs]. In essence, each cast member contributes something special and distinct to the overall production.
Behind the scenes, it’s safe to assume that the actors’ real lives don’t include concealing any murders! In all honesty, the Executive Producer showered nothing but compliments on the show’s stars. Furthermore, the trailer gives us a glimpse of what’s to come, and here’s a heads up – Aja Naomi King isn’t portraying her character from “Lessons in Chemistry,” while Amy from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” might need several drinks to embody Melissa Fumero’s new character as seen in the footage. Check it out:
Don’t forget to catch NBC on Sunday, February 23rd at 10:00 PM Eastern Time for the debut of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society“, or stream it the next day on Peacock. NBC will be launching an entirely new lineup on Sunday evenings starting with “The Americas” narrated by Tom Hanks and featuring music by Hans Zimmer at 8:00 PM Eastern Time; then comes the premiere of “Suits LA” with at least one unexpected character at 9:00 PM Eastern Time, and wrapping up the night with a mix of murder, mischief, and mulch in “GPGS”.
