Since 2016, WeChat has informally been associated with “Crazy Frog.” However, the corporation recently announced that they will be known as “Froggie” in English-speaking contexts. This decision was made after a grassroots campaign, which included the creation of a Froggie meme coin.
After that, the value of the token surged by 23%, reaching a market capitalization of $19 million. However, its value has decreased since then. WeChat has shown no signs of involvement in the meme coin market, making it unlikely for them to engage with this asset in the future.
WeChat Names Froggie Mascot
Today’s meme coin landscape is richly diverse, featuring a multitude of backstories that range from the downright absurd to the more plausible.
For instance, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao’s pet dog boasts a collection of meme-based cryptocurrencies, and one of yesterday’s top gainers is essentially worthless. Not surprisingly, WeChat’s iconic “Froggie” character has given rise to its own digital token as well.
It appears that the decision has been made – #NeuronFrog is now known as #Froggie on platform X. I’m excited for more Froggie-related moments to come! Ribbit! #Weixin #WeChat

Since 2016, the widely-used chat application has informally represented itself with a frog as its symbol. However, it was just last month that a poll was conducted to officially name this amphibious mascot.
After gaining popularity within the community, Froggie introduced its own meme token, which prompted WeChat to comply with the request. As a result, Froggie experienced a 26% increase in value and reached a market capitalization of $19 million.
As I scrutinize the potential of Froggie in the meme coin market, there’s a lingering doubt about its longevity. Despite WeChat boasting an impressive user base of over a billion active monthly users, Froggie’s influence appears minuscule in comparison, leaving me questioning its staying power.
Following a brief price surge and traders cashing out their profits, the value of the token experienced a significant drop. At present, it boasts a market capitalization of approximately $17 million.
To clarify, it’s important to note that Froggie the token does not have a direct connection with WeChat, and it doesn’t appear this will change in the future. Despite WeChat’s long-term support for the digital yuan, they have consistently prohibited any crypto and NFT transactions on their platform.
As a researcher exploring the realm of blockchain technology, I’ve observed a burgeoning sector in China. However, it’s crucial to note that the Chinese government maintains a strong skepticism towards cryptocurrencies primarily used for speculative purposes.
In simpler terms, while Telegram boasts a vibrant meme coin market and closely ties its operations to cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, WeChat lacks a similar history or focus on adopting Web3 technologies, particularly in the realm of meme coins.
Put simply, using WeChat occasionally might give Froggie a little extra push now and then. The platform has posted some Froggie-themed memes a few times recently, so increased interaction may hypothetically contribute to another surge in popularity.
Although it’s another cryptocurrency driven by the community with speculative intent, there’s a possibility that it could follow the trend of rising and falling sharply, known as a pump-and-dump scheme.
