As a film enthusiast, I couldn’t resist diving into “Wednesday” when it debuted a few years back, captivated by the reinvented gothic universe. A significant part of this enchantment was due to Jenna Ortega’s outstanding portrayal as the protagonist and the visually stunning world crafted by Tim Burton. Yet, the ensemble cast played an equally crucial role in winning over viewers, including the return of Christina Ricci to her “Addams Family” origins within this series. Interestingly enough, the star of “Yellowjackets” wasn’t initially intended for the Netflix sensation, and there’s a fascinating tale about how she ultimately became part of it.
As updates for Season 2 of the series “Wednesday” emerge – such as Lady Gaga’s involvement with the Burton franchise – excitement has been building among fans, including myself. Although details about Jenna Ortega’s plans for the second season remain unclear, her frequent discussions about the show have kept us eagerly anticipating. In fact, during her appearance on “The Tonight Show,” the actress who portrayed Wednesday Addams in 1991 shared the story behind how she landed the role.
As it transpires, her participation in the show was not initially part of the original scheme. Instead, an intriguing tale unfolds about how she came to be on the Nevermore campus.
Originally, they planned for me to take on a role when filming began, but at that time I was busy with Yellowjackets and expecting a baby. As a result, it wasn’t possible for me to be there. Later, an unexpected event occurred involving the original cast member, which led to rewriting the part and making changes. Coincidentally, I was about to give birth, and they said, ‘Great, you’ll have the baby and come here eight weeks later.’ To which I happily agreed, ‘I’m on board.’
It’s quite serendipitous that Ricci was ultimately cast as Marilyn Thornhill, considering she was initially in line for the role. With so many clashing schedules and Penelope going into labor, it’s nothing short of astounding how the part eventually came back to her. I can’t help but wonder what adjustments were made to the script. Nevertheless, I’m delighted that the original Wednesday got to act alongside Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday on screen.
Moving on, we find Ricci with some significant TV projects slated for 2025. It remains uncertain if she’ll feature in “Wednesday,” but the actress from “Now and Then” is set to debut the eagerly awaited third season of “Yellowjackets” on February 14th. Moreover, she will reprise her role as Catwoman in the latest Amazon Prime Video “Batman” series. The upcoming season 2 of “Batman: Caped Crusader,” following the events of the Season 1 finale, promises to be intriguing as well.
Despite her being incredibly occupied, this tale proves miracles can occur. As we anticipate news on the next escapade coming on Wednesday, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that Ricci will join in the fun.
The upcoming Addams Family series on Netflix’s 2025 lineup is one of many major shows set to debut. Although the specific premiere date hasn’t been announced, it promises another sharp and dark performance by Morticia and Gomez’s enigmatic daughter, with hopes that Wednesday Addams herself, portrayed by Christina Ricci, will make a comeback. Regardless of the details, I’m simply thrilled that everything fell into place to have her join Season 1.
