Apart from Britney Spears, another well-known figure, Wendy Williams, has faced a court-appointed conservatorship similar to hers since 2022. Williams, who has been diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, expressed her feelings in a rare interview, stating that the conservatorship makes her life feel like being confined within prison walls.
Because Britney Spears is well-known and her story received significant media attention, when people consider conservatorships, they often think directly of Britney Spears. After a difficult phase in her life, Spears was placed under a conservatorship managed by her father. For a time, it appeared to be the most suitable option for the renowned entertainer as she once again sold millions of records, embarked on world tours, and had a successful Vegas residency. However, on the downside, Spears lost control over her life and was unable to make simple decisions independently. Her supporters noticed this and initiated the #FreeBritney movement, which played a significant role in ending the conservatorship after 13 years.
During an interview on The Breakfast Club (as reported by Variety), Williams openly expressed her disagreement with the guardianship arrangement that has been in place since 2023. Last year, Williams was diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, a condition similar to what actor Bruce Willis experienced, effectively ending his acting career. However, despite this diagnosis, Williams maintains that she is not cognitively impaired.
I may not have cognitive issues, but I often feel as if I’m living in a confinement similar to that of a prison. The residents here are mostly elderly, with many being in their 90s, 80s, and 70s…There seems to be something unusual about the people on this floor.
Charlamagne Tha God, the host of “The Breakfast Club,” revealed that Wendy Williams, a longtime friend of his, is currently in a situation where she’s not allowed to leave her location. This is why she couldn’t join them live in the studio. Wendy’s niece, Alex Finnie, explained on the call that the facility she’s residing in is highly secured and only allows Williams to make calls, but family members can’t contact her. Finnie went on to say that Williams isn’t allowed to leave the location, not even for a walk or a visit with family members due to the strict security measures in place.
Wendy Williams Has Been Under a Guardianship Since 2022
Since the year 2023, Williams has resided in an unidentified institution due to a court-ordered guardianship under Sabrina Morrissey, following claims that the ex-talk show host was not of sound mind, leading to her inability to manage her finances. This issue was brought before a New York court, resulting in Wells Fargo bank requesting a temporary financial guardianship, allegedly to safeguard Williams’ assets. Since then, Williams’ life has been marked by this situation, with efforts persisting to secure her freedom.
Since 2023, this has been the ongoing situation: She consistently resides in a particular room, with no exception to days or hours, and her exposure to natural sunlight remains insufficient. In October, I made a trip to New York to see her. The strict security measures and intrusive questions I encountered were overwhelming, making the experience quite distressing.
The narrative surrounding Wendy Williams was delved into in the Lifetime documentary series titled “Where is Wendy Williams?”, which highlighted her attempts at returning to daytime television while also emphasizing her recent restrictions, hinting at potential early signs of cognitive impairment. This production also shed light on the challenging emotions her family faces when seeing her, and lends support to their claims that the guardianship serves as a protective measure. Contrary to popular belief, Williams stated that it was Morrisey who proposed the guardianship, making his subsequent lawsuit to halt the release of the documentary all the more puzzling. However, this legal action was ultimately rejected by a judge.
Williams went on to describe her current situation as a form of “emotional mistreatment.” The ex-talk show host expressed, “What are my thoughts about being mistreated? Well, the system I’m in is flawed, this system that has distorted many things.” At this establishment, Williams’ phone has been confiscated, and she is not permitted to make personal purchases. Additionally, she fears she might not be allowed to attend her father’s 94th birthday celebration in February.
Finnie suggested that people who wish to support her aunt’s mission could utilize the hashtag #FreeWendy, similar to how Spears’ supporters used #FreeBritney. Additionally, they can contribute to a GoFundMe page established by the family. Although there have been discussions about Williams’ condition, listening to the interview, she seems as aware as she was during her popular talk show that ran from 2007-2021. It appears that her situation warrants further examination, particularly if she is being unjustly detained and deprived of essential liberties.
