Work is being done on Season 3 of “The Diplomat,” the political thriller from Netflix featuring Keri Russell (“The Americans”) in the role of Ambassador Kate Wyler, and Rufus Sewell (“Dark City”) as her husband, Hal. Allison Janney portrays U.S. President Grace Penn, and an outstanding choice was made by casting Bradley Whitford, her co-star from “The West Wing,” in the role of Todd the First Husband.
Joining the cast of the much-anticipated West Wing reunion is Debora Cahn, who served as creator, showrunner, and executive producer on the hit series The Diplomat. Additionally, she was a producer and writer for the critically acclaimed and multiple award-winning NBC political drama. In an interview with Netflix, Cahn expressed her excitement about Whitford’s casting, stating that “Brad was our ideal version of Todd – it’s hard to believe our dream came true.
And things are going to be quite interesting for the characters, as Cahn explained:
In Season 3, Kate experiences the unique horror of achieving one’s desires,” or simply, “Season 3 presents a chilling portrayal of the struggle to obtain one’s wants by Kate.
‘The Diplomat’ Season Three: What We Know So Far
It’s possible that Cahn is referring to Hal taking an unorthodox path to assist his wife, a UK Ambassador, in securing the Vice Presidency of the United States, a position previously held by Penn. However, considering the revelations at the end of Season 2 when Kate learns about the true culprit behind the British submarine attack (an incident from Season 1), it seems that everything has certainly taken an unexpected turn.
It turned out that the HMS Courageous wasn’t bombed by an external adversary, but rather by elements within the British government, as Kate discovered. The Prime Minister’s ex-advisor, Margaret “Meg” Roylin (played by Celia Imrie), was implicated, along with the Vice President Penn.
In this scenario, if Scotland were to pursue independence, they might aim to prevent the shutdown of a nuclear submarine facility known as Creegan. This move could potentially be detrimental to the United States, as without the UK’s storage, it would be challenging for them to keep their nuclear weapons.
Hal skips informing Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval) and instead tells President Rayburn (Michael McKean) directly about the truth regarding the incident and his VP’s involvement. Upon hearing this news, the president suffers an unexpected demise. Before Penn could resign, she was immediately advanced to a significant position. The mastermind behind the conspiracy now leads the free world. However, the question arises, is Kate now the Vice President? It appears so, given Cahn’s statement suggesting that Kate gets what she desires.
In a recent interview with the “Skip Intro” podcast, Russell shared that production for Season 3 of The Diplomat is taking place in both New York City and London.
In Season 3, we’re filming scenes with large groups and numerous characters. To ensure clarity, we often rehearse these scenes thoroughly. The dialogue is fast-paced and diplomatic, so it’s important that everyone understands the meaning behind our words.
Currently, it’s planned for The Diplomat Season 3 to air in autumn 2025; however, a specific release date hasn’t been finalized yet. Keep an eye out for updates, trailers, and the official release date within the next few months.
