As a cinephile with a rich history of film appreciation, I find myself deeply moved by Kevin Costner‘s arduous journey with “Horizon: An America Saga.” Having traversed the vast landscapes of cinematic narratives myself, I can only imagine the passion and perseverance it takes to bring such an ambitious project to life.
As the fate of “Horizon: An America Saga” remains uncertain, Kevin Costner reflects on the challenging process of bringing his initial western tale to the big screen, which he characterized as one of the most agonizing episodes in his professional life. In the role of both an actor (donning his cowboy hat) and multi-tasker for “Horizon”, Costner donned multiple hats, writing, directing, producing, and starring in the film, along with its yet-to-be-released sequel, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2”.
In the introduction for his new book titled “The Great Horizon: Photographing Kevin Costner’s ‘American Saga'”, as reported by IndieWire, Costner reminisced about the challenging and lengthy process of bringing his four-part western tale to fruition, a journey that still continues. Costner referred to Horizon‘s narrative, depicting “the grueling journeys of men and women from various parts of America in search of their dreams,” as one of the most powerful stories ever told. The book has been a long-standing passion for Costner, and notably, he financed the film with approximately $100 million of his personal funds. Therefore, he feels deeply connected to the townspeople striving to build Horizon.
Working on “Horizon: An American Saga” has been the toughest creative expedition I’ve experienced so far.
The dream they pursued was fiercely battled for by a select few, with great effort and hardship for countless others. However, it was this very struggle that ultimately brought about its realization. Yet, the trailblazing journey towards the West brought about the horrors and devastation for the indigenous populations who had long inhabited those lands. This is a tale I felt compelled to share.
Will ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2’ Ever Be Released?
The book titled “Photography by Cale Glendening” showcases captivating backstage snaps of Kevin Costner, along with Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee, Jamie Campbell Bower, Michael Rooker, and others, during the movie-making process. Recently, Costner has posted one of these pictures on Instagram. In the introduction, Costner also spoke about the controversy surrounding the film’s portrayal of Native American people in “Horizon”. The film faced criticism for depicting the White Mountain Apaches in a negative manner. However, Costner stated that he aimed to present an unbiased and fair account of all stories involved, as he wrote:
I aimed to narrate their tales using the perspective of families, allies, and adversaries, all striving to alter their fates. From European colonizers to White Mountain Apache, from Chinese traders to Pima horse-riding scouts, each character crafted their unique narrative, venturing into unwritten and unfathomable chapters.
Enthusiasts of Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Chapter 2, and they might even offer a reward for its release (live version, clearly). Unfortunately, the second installment is still stuck in a state of uncertainty on the big screen. Originally planned for audiences this August 16th, the sequel was postponed indefinitely following the poor performance of Chapter 1 at the box office. However, Kevin Costner remains optimistic that fans will get to watch it eventually. “I’ll find a way to bring you 3 and 4,” the actor promised, “because you’ve seen 1, and you’re going to see 2, and we’re all embarking on a journey westward together.
