As a gamer with a deep appreciation for streetwear and surf culture, I can’t help but feel excited about this upcoming collaboration between Western Hydrodynamic Research (WHR) and SSZ. Having spent countless hours immersed in gaming worlds that often draw inspiration from real-life subcultures like these, I’ve come to truly admire the unique blend of minimalist design and urban edge they embody.
Western Hydrodynamic Research (WHR) and SSZ are joining forces for their inaugural collaborative line, merging the laidback vibe of California surf culture with the urban edge of Japanese streetwear style. This collaboration unites WHR, a brand established in Newport Beach by surfer Pat Towersey, with SSZ, a label conceived by Tadayuki Kato, a renowned surf and skate retailer.
As someone who has spent years immersed in the vibrant world of surf culture, I find the collection to be a refreshing representation of its laid-back spirit. The minimalist yet functional design approach resonates deeply with me, as it mirrors the simplicity and practicality inherent in the lifestyle I’ve come to cherish.
In a striking change from their past collaborations, SSZ has introduced a graffiti-style font in this new collection, giving it a gritty, urban feel that contrasts with the subtle aesthetics of their previous partnerships. What makes this collaboration unique is the option for customers to customize their purchases at the launch event by adding personalized badges, eyelets, and bungee cords – a tribute to WHR’s renowned DIY culture, resulting in genuinely distinctive items.
At the specified event happening on August 23 at Beams Harajuku, you’ll find the launch of the WHR x SSZ collection. Prices for this collection will range from approximately ¥12,100 to ¥22,000 JPY, which is around $82 to $150 USD.
