As a die-hard fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that “Alien: Romulus” has truly outdone itself with the terrifying Offspring, played by the colossal Robert Bobroczkyi. Standing at an imposing 7 feet 7 inches, this Romanian-born actor was destined for greatness from a young age, towering over his peers even before hitting double digits.

In Fede Álvarez’s space haunted house for “Alien: Romulus”, there are many common frightening sounds, but a fresh terror is introduced through the creature known as the Offspring. Similar to Ridley Scott’s original film providing one final scare, the character Rain (played by Cailee Spaeny) encounters her ultimate nightmare – a monster conceived from a blend of Alien and human genetics. In the movie credits, this 7-foot tall terror is simply referred to as the Offspring, and unlike many modern creations, it’s not computer generated; instead, it’s brought to life using traditional makeup, special effects, and an actor named Robert Bobroczkyi.

Standing at a towering 7 feet and 7 inches, Bobroczkyi was born in the Romanian city of Arad. Remarkably tall even as a child, he stood at 6 feet, 2 inches when he was just 8 years old, and added another foot to his height by the time he turned 12. Known for his impressive stature, Bobroczkyi is a former basketball player from Romania who relocated to Geneva, Ohio in 2016. In 2020, he enrolled at Rochester Christian University, but later chose to return home and attend college in Romania instead. The unique characteristics of his physique made him an excellent choice for the villainous role in the film’s climax.

Bobroczkyi had it in his genes to be a big presence

It’s interesting to note that although Robert Bobroczkyi has undergone numerous health assessments throughout his life, it appears that the extraordinary height in his family is what set the stage for his former basketball career. His father, Zsigmond Bobróczky, a retired ball player, towers at 7 feet, 2 inches, and his mother Brunhilde, who played volleyball and handball, stands tall at 6 feet, 2 inches. Despite not having any hormonal or growth-related issues, Robert’s physical condition on the court was less than ideal due to problems with mobility and stamina. Additionally, he had to grapple with scoliosis and lower back issues, which ultimately ruled out a professional basketball career for him.

It seems that, having played the role of Offspring and instilling fear across the cosmos, Bobroczkyi might have discovered a profession in the limelight. A cursory glance at his IMDb profile reveals that “Alien: Romulus” is his lone acting credit to date, but now Bobroczkyi adds his name to an esteemed list of talent who’ve made audiences quiver with fear for years on end. The first to make a sudden appearance from the darkness was when the xenomorph stowed away during the Nostromo’s crucial stop in 1979, and ever since, we’ve known that in space, silence can be deafening.

The original Alien was a tall one-time star

In the same vein as Fede Álvarez enlisted Robert Bobroczkyi to instill terror for his part in the Alien saga, Ridley Scott recruited a talent with an impressive screen presence to bring the Xenomorph to life in his original Alien film. Just like Bobroczkyi, Bolaji Badejo, a 6-foot-10-inch graphic designer, stepped into the role without any prior acting experience. He was discovered in a London pub by a casting director who was captivated by his long legs. Much like Bobroczkyi, he took on the challenge, and his contribution was more than enough to bring one of cinema’s most fearsome characters to life – a fact that other cast members were fully aware of and held in great respect.

In the making of the movie “Alien”, Bobroczkyi used makeup and prosthetics to create his character, whereas Badejo wore the iconic long, tubular headpiece of the Alien, along with a full body suit of tubes and mechanical piping. On set, it was discovered that Badejo couldn’t sit down in the suit, so the crew constructed a swing for him to use between takes. After the film became a hit, Badejo was invited to reprise his role for a sequel, but he returned to Nigeria where he opened an art gallery. Tragically, Badejo, who is known for his work in “Alien”, passed away in 1992 due to complications from sickle cell anemia at the age of 39. Despite only having one acting credit, Badejo left a substantial and enduring legacy that Bobroczkyi now carries on.
