What Happened to Judith Grimes in ‘The Walking Dead’?

As a die-hard fan of The Walking Dead since its inception, I must say that Judith Grimes has truly come into her own as a character. Her journey from a young girl who lost her mother to a brave and resilient leader is nothing short of inspiring.

Despite The Walking Dead’s main series wrapping up in November 2022, its zombie universe continues to thrive. Following the end of the primary show, at least three spin-offs have been introduced, such as Dead City, Daryl Dixon, and The Ones Who Live. Additionally, a fourth spin-off, More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe, is currently being developed by showrunner Scott M. Gimple.

In the sprawling world of The Walking Dead, it can be challenging to keep tabs on characters like young Judith Grimes and her destiny. To make things even more puzzling, the storyline for Judith in the comics deviates significantly from that in the TV show. However, fans finally got some much-needed insights about Judith’s whereabouts and future in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’s finale, providing valuable answers and bringing closure to her tale.

Who Is Judith Grimes in The Walking Dead?

What Happened to Judith Grimes in ‘The Walking Dead’?

In the Robert Kirkman comic series, Judith Grimes is the infant child of Lori Grimes, though it’s not definitively confirmed that Shane Walsh is her biological father. Regardless, Rick Grimes, Lori’s husband, adopts and raises Judith as his daughter. Before Lori’s tragic demise at the Governor’s estate in the comics, Rick vows to care for Judith as if she were his own. This leaves Rick deeply affected by their loss.

In the Walking Dead comics and TV show, Judith (Cailey Fleming) and Lori have distinct storylines. Lori tragically passes away early on due to complications during childbirth, with her son Carl having to put her down out of compassion. Contrastingly, Judith is born via C-section in the series and is cared for by Beth, Maggie, and Daryl in Season 3. As the story progresses into Seasons 4 and 5, Tyreese and Carol take charge of Judith’s upbringing until their demise, leading her to seek refuge in Alexandria.

Over the coming seasons, Judith experiences a tumultuous time in Alexandria, dealing with Negan’s merciless rule. In Season 8, she shares an emotional farewell with Carl after he is bitten by a walker. Despite Carl’s demise, Judith manages to flee into the underground tunnels beneath Alexandria as Negan bombs the area. Eventually, in Season 9, she reunites with her adoptive father, Rick Grimes. However, they are separated again over several seasons. In the end, Judith’s story arc in The Walking Dead concludes within the Commonwealth, where she looks after Daryl’s dog. Moved by this, Daryl sets out to find Rick and Michonne, as Judith comforts her brother RJ, saying, “We get a new beginning. We’re the ones who survive.

What Happened to Judith Grimes in ‘The Walking Dead’?

In the primary storyline of The Walking Dead, Judith’s future remains uncertain. However, insights are provided in the spin-off titled The Ones Who Live. This six-part series primarily revolves around Rick and Michonne’s relentless pursuit to reunite with each other and deepen their love.

In “The Last Time,” the final episode of “TWD: The Ones Who Live’, I was thrilled to see Rick and Michonne disembark from a helicopter, sprint across an expansive field, and ultimately embrace Judith and RJ within the Commonwealth. Michonne managed to contact Judith, bringing the news that her parents were on their way back home.

Immediately after seeing Rick, Judith embraces him tightly and expresses that she had always held onto the belief that he was still alive and would make it back home safely. Judith then tells him, “I wanted you to know you were never alone.” Not long after this heartwarming reunion, Rick is introduced to his son RJ for the first time, and he asks the boy to address him as “Dad.” In turn, RJ shares that he too had faith that Rick would come back home.

In the final moments, CRM helicopters pass overhead delivering supplies, as The Walking Dead concludes with the Grimes family sharing a tender farewell embrace. Rick, Michonne, Judith, and RJ have reunited and promise to stay united, battling tirelessly for survival amidst the unending zombie pandemic.

Where Is Judith Grimes Now?

Despite The Walking Dead spinoff titled “The Ones Who Live” wrapping up in March 2024, AMC has yet to announce any plans for a second season. However, showrunner Scott Gimple hinted at potential future developments when he spoke with Entertainment Weekly in April 2024.

It seems quite likely that this idea will manifest, but it could simply be a product of my imagination or creative writing.

Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) chimed in with:

It’s not entirely ruled out. There are numerous intriguing entities in the universe yet to be discovered, and I imagine it could be thrilling if they were to coexist with us. However, it’s a challenging prospect. It would require an exceptional plot…If such an idea sprang from Gimple’s or Danai’s minds, and it proved impossible to resist, then I believe there’s always the possibility that it might occur again. But I can’t predict when.

If AMC decides to continue the storyline of TWD: The Ones Who Live, it’s likely that Judith’s situation will change. Currently, she resides in the Commonwealth located in Ohio alongside Rick, Michonne, and RJ. It’s noteworthy that in the spin-off series, TWD: Daryl Dixon, Judith makes appearances during flashbacks in Daryl’s first season. Since Daryl Dixon has been renewed for a second season, there’s a possibility that Judith could reunite with Daryl once he expresses missing her dearly while in France.

After all, Daryl was tasked with reuniting Judith with her biological parents. Now that she is securely with her family, it seems that Judith’s journey with Daryl Dixon might be complete. If this is true, Judith’s storyline reaches its conclusion by locating her family and settling in the Ohio Commonwealth as a safe haven.

The Walking Dead is available to stream on AMC+ & Netflix.
