Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Last of Us season 2, episode 2 and The Last of Us Part II!
The central conflict in The Last of Us season 2 revolves around the tense dynamic between Ellie and Abby. While Ellie was the main character in season 1, this time she shares the limelight with Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. In contrast to Ellie’s relationship with Joel in season 1, her interaction with Abby is predominantly adversarial. Following the events of The Last of Us season 2, episode 2, here’s a glimpse into what transpires for these characters, as depicted in The Last of Us Part II.
In the second episode of The Last of Us season 2, we delve deeper into the narrative of The Last of Us Part II. Five years after the end of season 1, the reunion between Ellie and Joel has turned sour following their time in Salt Lake City. Unlike the game, the premiere presented some unique scenes, hinting that there might be a few alterations in store for this season. However, episode 2 makes it clear that the storyline of The Last of Us season 2 essentially mirrors that of The Last of Us Part II.
Ellie Hunts Down Abby & Her Group After Joel’s Death
She Starts A Journey To Seattle
In the second episode of “The Last of Us” season 2, Joel’s life comes to an end, marking a significant shift in the direction of the HBO series. During this episode, Joel and Dina embark on a reconnaissance mission, only for Jackson to be overrun by Infected while they are away. While out exploring, they encounter Abby, a fellow traveler under attack by the Infected. The pair manage to rescue Abby and meet up with her companions at a ski lodge. Unbeknownst to Joel, he had inadvertently killed Abby’s father in the finale of season 1, prompting Abby to take revenge on him later in this episode.
In the final moments of The Last of Us, Ellie discovers Joel in his dying state, leaving her inconsolable. As the episode concludes, Ellie, along with other significant characters from the series, transport Joel’s remains back to Jackson. Fortunately, subsequent events have been revealed through The Last of Us Part II. In the game, Tommy embarks on a mission to pursue Abby, seeking retribution first among them. Not long after, Ellie sets out, traveling with Dina towards Seattle to eliminate the Washington Liberation Front.
Ellie Kills Several Members Of Abby’s Group In Seattle
While Taking Down The WLF
In “The Last of Us Part II”, the characters who are friends with Abby, many of whom have been previously introduced in season 2, significantly impact Abby’s narrative. To Ellie, however, these individuals are simply murderers, prompting her to seek vengeance through violence against them. Throughout the game, Ellie eliminates several of Abby’s friends upon reaching Seattle. The portrayal of Abby in the game serves to humanize her companions before their untimely deaths.
Abby Spares Ellie & Dina After Tracking Them Down
Thanks To Her Time With Yara And Lev
During halfway through “The Last of Us Part II“, Abby crosses paths with Ellie once more. Discovering that Ellie is pursuing them, Abby locates a deserted theater where they’ve taken refuge. Inside the theater, she finds Ellie, Dina, Jesse, and Tommy. Instead of approaching peacefully, Abby storms in, firing her weapons. In the chaos, she kills Jesse and wounds Tommy, causing him to lose an eye. After a fierce battle with Ellie and Dina, Abby chooses to spare them upon learning that Dina is expecting a child.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my thoughts on Abby’s transformation in “The Last of Us” storyline. Unlike what some might see as a surprising move, Abby’s change of heart becomes crystal clear when we delve into her narrative. During her travels, Abby stumbles upon a violent cult called the Seraphites, and here’s where things get interesting.
She encounters two young Seraphites named Yara and Lev, and their connection with her reshapes her entirely. This dynamic between Abby and the kids mirrors Ellie and Joel from the initial story, and I believe it’s her empathy for these children that prompts Abby to make choices, like sparing Ellie and Dina, that are otherwise uncharacteristic of her.
Ellie Ends Up Going After Abby A Second Time & Saves Her Life
She Finds Abby In California
Following Abby’s choice to let Ellie and Dina live, the injured group chooses to return home. Jesse’s demise leaves them a man short, while Dina’s pregnancy and Tommy’s missing eye make it wise for the group to head back to Jackson. Ellie and Dina share a farmhouse in Jackson, taking care of Dina’s baby together. However, after a year has passed, Ellie’s anger resurfaces. Determined to confront Abby, she embarks on a journey once more, seeking vengeance against her.
Eventually, Ellie locates Abby in California, though they appear weak upon arrival. It’s revealed that Abby and Lev had journeyed to California to find the Fireflies, but were captured by a faction called the Rattlers. Ellie rescues both Abby and Lev, but later instigates a fight with Abby. In this confrontation, two of Ellie’s fingers are severed, yet she gains control. The parallels between Abby’s bond with Lev and Ellie’s connection with Joel become evident to her, leading her to spare Abby from further harm.
What Happens To Ellie & Abby At The End Of The Last Of Us
Both Characters Go Their Own Way
Following their last encounter, Ellie and Abby choose to part ways. Meanwhile, Abby and Lev embark on their journey, seeking the Fireflies, eventually boarding a boat bound for Catalina Island, where they have been known to reassemble.
As Ellie returns to Jackson, she discovers that Dina has departed since Ellie journeyed to California. It seems probable that Ellie’s decision to pursue Abby once more disregarded Dina’s pleas. Upon arriving home, Ellie struggles with Joel’s guitar due to her injured hand, symbolizing the sacrifices involved in seeking revenge. The sequel to The Last of Us concludes here, leaving Ellie’s tale on a melancholic note.
