In keeping with the series’ established pattern since Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, season 2 of Andor plunges straight into the heart of the action. The premiere, titled “One Year Later,” commences with our main character, Cassian Andor, pilfering a TIE fighter prototype and clandestinely meeting an associate on a planet that becomes apparent as Yavin – a place familiar to Star Wars enthusiasts as the launch site for the Rebel Alliance’s daring assault against the Death Star.
The arranged meeting has fallen apart, and Cassian finds himself captured by a faction of Rebels called the Maya Pei Brigade. This situation turns into a series of blunders as the Brigade is leaderless and constantly bickering among themselves, yet they are reluctant to believe Andor’s assertion that he, too, is a Rebel. The episode serves as a powerful illustration of the fragmented and tumultuous state of the Rebellion during its early stages. The Brigade is given minimal background information, which is sufficient for the story. It’s probable that fans of _Star Wars_ will encounter this unit again in the future.
Maya Pei Is the Offscreen Leader of a Rebel Cell
Maya’s “Neo-Republican Collective” Is One of Many Fighting the Empire
In the show “Andor,” Saw Gerrera, a former Rebel leader known for his extremist views, is portrayed with a touch of background intrigue. Although he was killed in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” he makes an appearance in Season 1 as one of many operatives under his network. Despite appearing more stable in “Andor,” Gerrera remains distrustful and argumentative towards his fellow Rebel leaders, particularly when it comes to the idea of a unified front. He even subjects disliked leaders to rigorous ‘purity tests.’ This characteristic is vividly depicted in a mini-storyline that unfolds throughout Season 1.
In this scenario, Luthen Rael proposes a gathering where he requests Saw to collaborate with Anto Kreegyr, an erstwhile Separatist who persisted in his rebellion against the Republic even after it transformed into the Empire. Saw initially refuses due to their apparent ideological rifts. However, he eventually reconsiders, but it’s too late. Rael calls off the operation once he learns that the Imperials are aware of it, allowing Kreegyr to proceed with the mission, resulting in his own destruction. This leads the Imperials to believe that the Rebellion no longer exists, and leaves Saw pondering the harsh tactics required to overthrow the Empire.
In the same episode, Maya Pei and her resistance cell are introduced for the first time, apparently in similar difficult situations. Cassian dislikes her just as much as Kreegyr, referring to her by name as someone he doesn’t find morally sound enough to collaborate with. He dismissively calls her a “Neo Republican,” implying that she represents the very corruption of the system that led to the rise of the Empire. Contrastingly, Dedra Meero frequently mentions her during her reports to Imperial Intelligence in connection with Rael’s Axis network and specifically names Maya Pei’s safe house as a significant location within the organization. Cassian later confirms that Luthen’s group has been providing aid to them on their journey, making their sudden hostility towards him all the more unexpected.
The Maya Pei Brigade Is The Remains of Her Unit
Andor Reveals the Shattered Survivors of an Unspecified Attack
In the series “One Year Later,” it seems Maya Pei was presumably killed off-screen, although only one character witnessed her demise. Afterward, her resistance group, known as the Brigade, appears on Yavin 4, struggling, hungry, and without a leader. With no clear path ahead, internal disputes erupt among them, leading to full-blown conflict. This chaos provides an opportunity for Cassian to steal a TIE fighter, leaving many unanswered questions about Maya Pei’s fate and the Brigade’s future that the show “Andor” might address as the season unfolds.
The details surrounding Maya Pei’s demise remain unclear, and it is speculated that her squadron met its end through various possible causes. While some survivors insist they were ambushed, leading to the loss of six freighters and more than 40 fighters, an Imperial attack seems plausible. However, there are theories suggesting that Rael might have used them in another scheme to strengthen the Rebellion. It’s also a possibility that they were eliminated by a rival Rebel group. Whatever the case may be, their presence on Yavin underscores the fact that the Rebel Alliance didn’t suddenly emerge once the Empire took over.
Four scant years prior to the momentous triumph of the Rebellion, they were locked in heated conflict with one another, squabbling over meager resources as the Empire reveled in their discord. The Brigade’s history may not hold much significance compared to its current state, which appears quite bleak. Nevertheless, their presence on Yavin hints at a role they might play in transforming the forest moon into a critical Rebel stronghold. Despite their seemingly weakened state, the Brigade remains resilient, serving as an emblematic symbol of the Rebellion’s tenacity and refusal to succumb easily.
