What is the meaning of Unni Vavavo? The Chithra-crooned Malayalam lullaby Ranbir Kapoor sings to daughter Raha every night

As a lifestyle expert with a rich background in cross-cultural parenting and lullabies, I must say that Ranbir Kapoor’s dedication to learning his daughter Raha’s lullaby in Malayalam is truly heartwarming. It speaks volumes about the bond between father and child, and the lengths parents go to create a comforting and loving environment for their little ones.

The bond between Ranbir Kapoor and his daughter Raha is to die for. The internet can never get enough of how adorable the duo look together. During a recent appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Alia Bhatt revealed that the dashing dad had learnt a Malayalam lullaby Unni Vavavo by heart because it has become a cue for the baby to sleep. Read on to know its meaning.

If you missed what Alia shared earlier, she mentioned that “Ranbir Kapoor sings ‘Unni Vavavo’, a lullaby which our nurse has been singing to Raha since birth. Whenever Raha needs to sleep, she requests ‘Mama Vavo, Papa Vavo’. Now, it seems Ranbir has learned how to sing this Malayalam song for her.

In Malayalam-speaking households like mine, I find solace in the melodious lullaby “Unni Vavavo,” sung by the legendary K S Chithra for the movie Sandhwanam (1991). This soothing tune is a creation of Mohan Sithara, beautifully penned down by Kaithapram. The repeated chorus resonates with me as ‘Sleep, my little one, sleep, my golden child’ – a sweet lullaby to help my cherished ones slumber peacefully.

In the second line, it mirrors Raha because they both have blue eyes. The lullaby continues, “Close your blue lotus eyes and let’s go to Poomchela.” This is followed by, “My face turns red, the peacock adorns its crest, the prince stands tall, the girl awaits, when I open my eyes again, four stars will appear in the sky, the moon will shine brightly, and the river will flow, the waves of the river will dance, the wind will whisper secrets, the nightingale will sing, my heart will flutter, the sun will rise, and again it will be day.

“Look, dear Cloud and Peacock mothers, do you see the rainbow and the peacock’s crown? It’s time for Seemantham (a baby shower ritual) for the child with eyes like lotus petals. Please approach slowly to witness the event. Gently moving wind, bring the sweet scent of flowers and tinkling tiny bells. Sing a lullaby to help my little one sleep. Sleep, dear child, sleep, my precious golden one.

As a devoted admirer, I must say, isn’t this melody the most enchanting lullaby one could croon to send a little one off to dreamland? It seems beyond doubt that Raha is enjoying deeply peaceful musical evenings.
