In a freshly released sneak peek focusing on the upcoming project, the lead actress of “The Woman in The Yard,” BAFTA and SAG nominee Danielle Deadwyler (known for her role in “Till”), hints that this latest horror collaboration between Blumhouse and Universal Pictures is a pathway to something truly terrifying.
In a chilling turn of events, I found myself drawn into a chilling tale directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, known for his work on “Jungle Cruise” and “Carry-On”. The story revolves around a small, grief-stricken family – mother Ramona (played by Deadwyler), son Taylor (Peyton Jackson), and daughter Annie (Estella Kahiha) – who find themselves under the unnerving gaze of a mysterious woman cloaked entirely in black (Okwui Okpokwasil). Sitting ominously in their rural farmhouse’s front yard, this enigmatic figure stirred unease with cryptic utterances like “Today’s the day” and hints that she takes pleasure in consuming innocent children. As twilight approached, the family began to grasp the urgency of fleeing their property before succumbing to an entity beyond our worldly comprehension.
In simpler terms, “The Woman in The Yard” appeals to me because it showcases themes like motherhood, rural living, and farm life, but it also introduces an element of disruption. As Deadwyler discusses in the video below, this film falls under the genre of pure horror-thriller.
In this movie, it’s wonderful to see an all-Black cast where their racial identity isn’t the central theme, but rather a part of their characters’ complexities. As Okpokwasili explains in the production notes, these characters are raw and authentic, experiencing pain, grief, and struggle – emotions that are messy and real. They strive, they fall short, and under circumstances that would overwhelm many others.

The Woman in The Yard cast teases Blumhouse horror flick in new featurette
Written by new screenwriter Sam Stefanak, The Woman in The Yard features Russell Hornsby (known for his role in Grimm) portraying Ramona’s deceased husband, David. David is expected to appear through a sequence of flashbacks. “Ramona’s husband was an architect,” explains Stephanie Allain, who is a producer along with Jason Blum at Blumhouse Productions, “so we had a workspace filled with models and drafting tools. We aimed to accurately depict a Black upper-middle-class family, and we succeeded. Stereotypes fuel fear of the unknown. This film contributes to the solution.
Deadwyler and Collet-Serra serve as executive producers alongside James Moran and Gabrielle Ebron.
