Beware: Spoilers for the third episode of Season 2 from the series “1923” are circulating! To stay updated, you can stream this Paramount+ exclusive spin-off of “Yellowstone” and tune in each Sunday for new episodes.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’ve been following the Yellowstone series closely. The Dutton family has been battling the harsh winter, and each member seems to be grappling with their own struggles. However, Elizabeth, who suffered a miscarriage at the end of Season 1 and has since encountered dangerous wildlife, appears to be bearing the brunt of it all.
In the first two episodes of Season 2 alone, she fought off a cougar and was attacked by a wolf. Now, after an emotional confrontation with Cara, played by the talented Helen Mirren, Elizabeth found herself on the receiving end of a slap from her co-star.
So, during my recent interview with the cast, I couldn’t help but inquire about Michelle Randolph’s experience of being physically involved in such a scene with a fellow actor.
Following Elizabeth’s encounter with a wolf that resulted in a bite, a physician advised that she must receive an injection daily to prevent rabies. However, Elizabeth was apprehensive about the potential impact on her future fertility, and she vehemently resisted the idea of these shots. In Episode 3, as several men attempted to restrain her, Cara intervened by slapping her and exclaimed: “You need to accept this!
It seems you’re asking me to do something drastic in the living room, as if we were both lost in the throes of madness. I must say, life isn’t fair, and you’ve likely come to that realization by now. However, compared to the woman in Dr. Miller’s buggy, your life has been a blessing. That much is certain. As a woman, whether or not you’re prepared for that identity is questionable, but it’s time to start embracing it.
Experiencing that intense and startling instant left me curious about capturing it myself, which led me to inquire from Michelle Randolph about what it felt like to be slapped by Helen Mirren. She shared that surprisingly, it was her most cherished scene during this current television season as per the 2025 TV schedule.
This sounds so funny, but that was my very favorite scene to film of this entire season.

Following the revelation that Alex was pregnant in 1923, my curiosity led me to question Julia Schlaepfer about the theories surrounding her character and the Dutton family lineage.
Witnessing Cara’s slap and humbling words, combined with Mirren’s magnitude, must have been a powerful spectacle. Moreover, Randolph’s intense emotional response and courage to confront Cara added depth to the scene, as it demonstrated her determination to live up to the strong woman she portrayed.
My Elizabethan-era acting colleague shared with me that during the shooting of this particular scene, she experienced a thrill running through her entire body due to the extraordinary experience of working alongside her fellow actor. In simpler terms, she told me that she got goosebumps all over because it was such an amazing feeling performing alongside her co-star.
Being physically slapped by Helen Mirren makes it nearly impossible for you to not be fully aware and in the moment. One particular scene left me with a shiver down my spine from the get-go, and her presence is overwhelmingly powerful during that time.
In all the Yellowstone series, both Cara and Elizabeth exhibit strong-willed and self-reliant personalities, just like the other female characters. Generally, Mirren’s character provides gentle yet firm backing for Randolph’s. However, in this particular scene, Elizabeth was acting so erratically that it seemed Cara needed to jolt her system to snap her out of it. The immediate reality check she received afterward was particularly impactful. This is why the young actress enjoyed filming this scene – it had a powerful emotional impact (not just figuratively but also literally).
I’m eagerly awaiting to find out how this formidable event influences Elizabeth and her thoughts towards the ranch. Will she decide to depart or remain? How will Cara, Jack, and Jacob lend their support in this situation? The future remains uncertain, but tune in next Sunday to witness how the entire Dutton clan navigates through this severe and turbulent winter as depicted in 1923.
