Javed Akhtar, a renowned lyricist, is not hesitant to express his feelings openly. He’s candid about his past struggle with alcohol addiction and the challenging road he traversed before overcoming it. Recently, he revealed an interesting aspect of this journey – his allergy to whiskey led him to develop an addiction to beer instead. In one instance, he admitted to consuming as many as 18 bottles of beer at a sitting. However, when he started noticing an increase in belly fat, the seasoned lyricist decided to switch to rum.

During an open conversation with Mid-day, Javed Akhtar shared his struggle with becoming addicted to alcohol after developing an allergy to whiskey. He stated, “I developed an intolerance for whiskey. Thinking I could still drink, I decided to switch to beer instead. Unfortunately, in a single sitting, I would consume as many as 18 bottles of beer.

Speaking more about his shift to rum consumption, he expressed, “It seemed to me like I was bloating my belly with beer. So, I gave it up and began drinking rum instead.” The poet and scriptwriter also mentioned that he had grown so accustomed to alcohol that he didn’t require any companionship to drink it. He admitted that he would even consume it alone if no one was around.

Previously, on Satyameva Jayate, Javed Akhtar openly spoke about his struggle with alcoholism. He traced it back to when he was 19 years old and started drinking socially with friends in Mumbai after graduation. Over time, this social drinking turned into an addiction for him. Moreover, during the early days, he faced financial hardships, but once he had adequate funds, he admitted to consuming a bottle of alcohol every day.

On July 31, 1991, Javed Akhtar also mentioned he decided to stop drinking alcohol. In an interview for the Be A Man, Yaar podcast, he considered quitting alcohol as one of the positive changes in his life. Since that day, he hasn’t had a single sip of alcohol or even champagne, not even during celebratory moments. “I haven’t taken a sip of champagne since then. Not even when people cheer,” he shared.
