WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Duster season 1, episode 1.
In the first episode of season 1 titled “Baltimore Changes Everything,” the series Duster presents Josh Holloway as character Jim Ellis, a mafia escape driver whose sibling, Joey, had passed away years ago. Throughout the show, Josh Holloway plays the role of Jim Ellis, who works for crime boss Ezra Saxon (Keith David). In remembrance of his late brother, Jim keeps his dog tags hanging from the rearview mirror of his 1970 cherry red Plymouth Duster. FBI agent Nina Hayes, a recent graduate from Quantico and advocate for change, uncovers that there may be discrepancies regarding Jim’s brother’s identity; she suspects he might not have been named James and that his death during the Vietnam War could be false.
At the close of episode 1 from season 1 of “Duster”, Nina successfully persuades Jim, initially hesitant, to endorse a document making him an FBI informant. This decision stems from Nina presenting Jim with compelling proof that contradicts his understanding of Joey’s death, thereby raising his doubts about Saxon. Overhearing Saxon remark that eliminating Bob Temple would have been simpler than letting Jim frame him, Jim becomes determined to investigate whether Saxon was indeed involved in the incident. This risky move is driven by his lingering affection and longing for Joey, feelings that have persisted over the years.
A Phoenix Police Report Claimed Joey Ellis Died From An Accidental Propane Explosion
Nina Discovered Footage Of The Van Explosion That Didn’t Look So Accidental
Following some investigative work in the FBI records, Nina and Awan learn from coworker Jessica-Lorraine Simes that Joey Ellis perished due to an unintentional propane tank blast on North 83rd Street, Phoenix, AZ. Eager to obtain case files related to Saxon Ellis, which were handled by ex-FBI agent Leland Breen, Nina finds herself at a dead end when she realizes at the close of Duster season 1, episode 1 that all the relevant documents have vanished. However, they hit a significant stride in their investigation when Awan locates security footage showing the van where Joey was fatally injured.
Due to a personal grudge Nina holds against Saxon, as she confides in Jim at the end of Duster season 1, episode 1, she doubts that Joey’s death was an accident. Leveraging this information, she persuades Jim to infiltrate Saxon’s group undercover, as his curiosity grows too strong to ignore the possibility of Nina’s lead. Although they team up against Saxon in Duster season 1, their motivations differ; while Jim is solely focused on uncovering the truth about Joey’s demise and proving Nina wrong about Saxon’s involvement, Nina harbors a personal vendetta.
Nina Hayes Finds Video Evidence Suggesting That Joey Was Assassinated By Ezra Saxon
She Thinks There’s No Coincidence That Joey Died While Working For Saxon
Nina delving into the FBI archives appears as if she’s disregarding the instructions of her superior at the FBI, Agent Grant (portrayed by Dan Tracy). As a result, her supervisor, Abbott, tells her she’ll be relocated to a field office in Butte, Montana. To Nina, this move seems like a career-ending event, as it will distance her significantly from Saxon.
The repeated transfers of Nina due to her investigations into the FBI’s past might signal that there’s something suspicious happening within the Phoenix FBI division’s ranks. Nina manages to keep Jim as her informant and avoids being transferred, but she’s instead finding herself in a more complex situation involving a possible conspiracy.
It’s worth mentioning that since Nina is driven more by a desire to see Saxon punished for reasons other than avenging Joey’s death, her judgment might be influenced or tainted. Nevertheless, she brings up a striking inconsistency between the cause of death stated in the Phoenix PD report and the footage from the van explosion.
It’s apparent that the blast originated beneath the van, casting a shadow of uncertainty on the report suggesting Joey was smoking with leaky propane tanks in the van. Meanwhile, Nina is convinced that Saxon murdered Joey in the Duster incident, and she harbors suspicions that Leland Breen, involved in the Saxon case, might have concealed this truth.
