Following the setback with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it’s not unexpected that Warner Bros. and Rocksteady are developing a new Batman game now. Given how outstanding the Arkham series has been and its impact on numerous action games, we believe this upcoming title could benefit from learning a few strategies from one of its peers – Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Enthusiasts of DC comics have been abuzz since Bloomberg revealed news about an upcoming game starring Batman. These same fans were disheartened by the unfortunate end of Monolith’s Wonder Woman game, but such is life. Although it’s likely years off, a new Batman game brings hope to many.
For those familiar with Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, they’ve adapted elements from the Arkham series in a manner distinctively Spidey. The tie-in games based on The Amazing Spider-Man movie further leaned into the Arkham style, featuring similar fight and stealth sequences. It seems that Spider-Man has picked up quite a few tricks from DC’s emblematic hero, but now it’s time for the tables to turn.
While it’s important to note that we’re not suggesting a complete overhaul for the next Batman game, there are certain elements from Marvel’s Spider-Man games by Insomniac that could be beneficial for the new Batman title to adopt. Here are some ideas:
1. A more immersive and engaging open world: The Spider-Man games have created a vibrant and dynamic cityscape that invites exploration, making it feel like an extension of the character’s universe. Applying this approach to the new Batman game could make Gotham City feel even more menacing and alive.
2. Improved traversal mechanics: Web-swinging in the Spider-Man games is a seamless and exhilarating experience, allowing players to navigate the city quickly and effortlessly. While Batman doesn’t have web-shooters, there are other creative ways to enhance his movement and exploration capabilities within the game world.
3. A focus on storytelling and character development: The Spider-Man games have a strong narrative that delves deep into Peter Parker’s life, as well as the relationships between characters. By emphasizing Batman’s emotional journey and the complex dynamics between key figures in his world, the new game can create a more compelling experience for players.
4. Innovative combat systems: The combat in the Spider-Man games is both visually stunning and tactically challenging, with a variety of enemy types and creative ways to take them down. By incorporating similar elements into the Batman series, players can enjoy a more dynamic and satisfying fight experience.
5. Integration of iconic villains and supporting characters: The Spider-Man games feature an impressive roster of memorable villains and allies, each with their unique personalities, motivations, and roles within the story. By bringing together a diverse cast of Gotham’s most notorious criminals and Batman’s trusted allies, the new game can create a rich and engaging narrative.
Gotham City with Actual Citizens
Instead of just one aspect, what if I say that Rocksteady’s upcoming Batman game could greatly benefit from adopting some elements seen in Marvel’s Spider-Man, particularly an immersive open world teeming with life. The Arkham series, including Arkham City, Origins, and Knight, have been impressive in their own right, but they fell short by not fully immersing us into the expansive Gotham City setting for narrative purposes. Consequently, we missed out on a truly authentic Batman game experience that takes place within the city limits of Gotham.
Fans might claim that Batman and Spider-Man’s tones are too disparate for shared open worlds, but this is merely an unimaginative objection. Imagine the excitement if Bruce Wayne interacts with Gotham’s residents! Perhaps he could even converse with low-level criminals to gather intel. This scenario brims with narrative possibilities, so Rocksteady Studios should seize this opportunity.
Bring In the Sidekicks
Hey there fellow gamers! Let me clarify something about the next Batman game – we’re not advocating for compulsory civilian stealth sections like those found in the Insomniac Spider-Man titles. Although these segments can be entertaining, they are usually unnecessary and feel more like filler than an integral part of the gameplay experience. It’s a shame that some exciting symbiote boss fights were cut from the sequel, but instead, we were left stealthily navigating as Mary Jane – not quite our idea of fun.
It’d be fantastic if the upcoming game allowed for swapping between Robin and Nightwing, similar to how Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 enables switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales. We believe DC should definitely adopt this concept. Additionally, having the option to explore certain areas as Batgirl would make the experience even more exciting.
Instead of just offering additional linear or brief stories as DLC for Arkham City and Arkham Knight, it’s high time we allow the sidekicks to roam freely within the open world along with their mentors, providing a more immersive experience.
Changing Costumes from the Pause Menu
In the upcoming Batman game, it would be great if players could switch costumes more seamlessly without having to complete the campaign first or quitting to the main menu to change outfits, as that can disrupt gameplay flow.
In Marvel’s Spider-Man, you have the option to switch costumes in the pause menu, which is fantastic! You can wear these costumes once you’ve earned them through the game’s different currencies (not actual money, thankfully). This feature is terrific and I believe it should be adopted by the next Batman game.
