Contains spoilers for “Squid Game” Season 2
We endured over three years before the second season of “Squid Game” premiered on Netflix, a duration that seemed like forever. Fortunately, the gap between Season 2 and Season 3 is expected to be significantly smaller – with a release date set for 2025 – but the wait will undoubtedly remain challenging, given the dramatic ending of the second season. With the suspenseful finale of Season 2, fans are left with numerous questions that they eagerly want resolved.
If fortune favors us, the third season could finally provide resolution for several storylines left hanging at the conclusion of season 2. For example, one character might find an opportunity for redemption, while another may turn out not to have perished. Additionally, there are many intriguing fan speculations about what awaits in season 3, and a hint from season 1 that remains unfulfilled could be significant. Here’s our wishlist for “Squid Game” Season 3.
More new games
The games are undeniably what makes the show so captivating, and without them, Season 3 wouldn’t feel right. Since Gi-hun’s uprising was unsuccessful, and it seems that there are more O voters than X voters now, the games will continue. In the post-credits scene of “Squid Game” Season 2, we got a hint about a new game coming up. The sneak peek suggests that the Red Light, Green Light doll is making a return, but this time she’s not alone – she has a companion named Cheol-su. The teaser also shows railroad crossing lights alternating between red and green, which might suggest a new take on Red Light, Green Light or an entirely different game with a train or trolley theme. Some fans are guessing that the game could be the Korean playground game called Dong, Dong, Dongdaemun.
In the dorm room’s artwork this season, hints are provided about the upcoming games, much like in Season 1. For instance, some viewers have noticed that the dorm room in Season 2 is adorned with a ceiling illustration of players swinging from it, suggesting that a thrilling game of monkey bars will feature prominently in Season 3. Additionally, the wall behind the bunk beds shows a checkerboard pattern, possibly indicating that we’ll witness a large-scale chess game or another board game where people could be used as pieces. If this is the case, Gi-hun might find himself grappling with a complex moral dilemma: deciding which characters to potentially sacrifice for the greater good.
Gi-hun facing off against the Front Man
Despite what you might think, Gi-hun remains unaware that Hwang In-ho deceived him. As the end of Season 2 approaches, Gi-hun maintains his belief that Player 001 (who went under the false name Oh Young-il) sacrificed himself heroically during the uprising. However, this state of affairs won’t last forever: Eventually, the truth will surface, and it could shatter Gi-hun to his very core. It’s challenging to foresee how he’ll react. Will the revelation extinguish Gi-hun’s resolve completely? Or will it inspire him to keep fighting, because he understands that Player 001’s heroic act failed due to their conflicting interests?
It’s almost certain that Gi-hun and the Front Man will clash in Season 3, as they are key characters driving the show’s conflict and exploring its themes. Along the journey, we might uncover whether the Front Man’s actions during the games were part of a grand scheme to manipulate Gi-hun or if he began to question his own actions and even empathize with him. The psychological games that In-ho played against Gi-hun in Season 2 ended disastrously, but we fervently wish for them to have another chance at a rematch in Season 3.
Kim Jun-hee’s baby
While Season 2 of “Squid Game” hinted that Kim Jun-hee is expecting, viewers are left wondering about her delivery scenario in Season 3. In the interim season, Geum-ja notices signs suggesting the baby might arrive soon, implying that, considering the duration of the games, it’s highly possible Jun-hee may give birth amidst the ongoing competition. Given the challenges associated with childbirth under ideal conditions, delivering in a war zone like the dormitory or during a game is likely to pose additional risks for Jun-hee.
If she manages to deliver a healthy baby, what happens next in the games? This could be an unparalleled event. Will the pink guards take the newborn away from her, or will Jun-hee be compelled to participate in the games with the infant by her side? If so, would they assign the child its own number? The prospect of a “Squid Game baby” might motivate other players to support Jun-hee to ensure both her and the child’s survival. In fact, some spectators have hypothesized that if Gi-hun is going to perish, it could be in an act of selflessness to protect Jun-hee and her child. This sacrifice would signify that Gi-hun no longer wishes to risk a few lives for the greater good.
No-eul helping Player 246 and his daughter
Despite appearing to be killed following Gi-hun’s failed uprising, there’s a glimmer of hope that Park Gyeong-seok (Player 246) may still be alive. The scene doesn’t clearly show where the pink guard shoots him, suggesting he might have only been wounded in his shoulder or leg, similar to Jun-ho’s seemingly fatal encounter in an earlier episode. Additionally, the episode ends abruptly before we see Player 246’s body, a technique reminiscent of a previous twist involving Il-nam’s apparent demise.
While Season 2 doesn’t definitively show who fired the shot, many viewers are guessing it could be guard No-eul (pink guard 011). If true, she might have intentionally aimed for a wound that wouldn’t be fatal – not to allow other pink guards to harvest his organs, but rather to give him time to live and find a means of escape. Interestingly, a hint may have been unintentionally dropped by Park Gyu-Young, suggesting this theory could hold some truth.
In the games or otherwise, No-eul deeply empathizes with Player 246, as they share a personal connection outside of gaming and both have experienced the heartache of having a child with uncertain prospects for survival. Here’s to hoping that No-eul will find it within her heart to save Gyeong-seok and his daughter, even if their chances may seem slim. We eagerly anticipate a joyful resolution to this tale in Season 3.
Player 007 dying to save his mother
In the gripping second season of “Squid Game,” one shocking turn is learning that a mother and her son are contestants, each praying their winnings could save the other. This plot twist sparks a chilling query: What if either (or both) of them don’t survive? Though losing either would be tragic, the most heart-wrenching situation might be Yong-sik’s demise, leaving his mother to continue without him. In a poignant moment during Season 2, Geum-ja contemplates this unbearable scenario, telling her son, “Even if I managed to escape, I wouldn’t have a reason to live anymore.” With the prospect hinted at in Season 2, it appears that this heartbreaking outcome may unfold in Season 3.
In this scenario, if Yong-sik perishes, it would be a fitting end given his past actions, as it offers him an opportunity to make amends by saving his mother. After disregarding his mother’s warnings and putting her in danger during the ‘Mingle’ game, he could atone for his mistakes, even if it means giving up his life for her. This turn of events would echo the first season, where Gi-hun entered the games to save his mother but ultimately failed. If Yong-sik dies, we hope that Geum-ja will find the courage to move on from her loss — and perhaps invite all the surviving players for a heartfelt dinner gathering.
Closure for Gi-hun’s daughter and Sae-byeok’s brother
In Season 2, Gi-hun hasn’t managed to reunite with his daughter Ga-yeong yet. He hasn’t had the opportunity to bid her a proper goodbye; instead, he loses courage when trying to call her before reentering the game. Meanwhile, Kang Cheol, Sae-byeok’s brother, has improved since she entered the games but his storyline remains unfinished. He’s safe under the care of Sang-woo’s mother for now, but we haven’t seen if Gi-hun’s quest to find Choel’s birth mother will be successful. This leaves many viewers eager to see those hanging threads resolved for the people who were left behind when Gi-hun reentered the games.
In the second season, Gi-hun goes above and beyond to hire a broker who helps bring Cheol’s mother over the border. Even if Gi-hun doesn’t make it through Season 3, there’s a chance that the broker might successfully reunite Cheol with his mom. Meanwhile, the Front Man consistently encourages Gi-hun to have joined the plane to see his daughter, suggesting this plot isn’t done yet. It would be heartwarming to witness Gi-hun finally meeting or at least knowing about his daughter. Alternatively, if Gi-hun decides to give up his life to stop the games, we hope to see Ga-yeong learn about her father’s selfless actions.
Exposing the games to the world
In spite of Gi-hun and Jun-ho’s persistent attempts to reveal the truth about the games, their claims are met with skepticism by everyone. This allows the mysterious Front Man to carry on orchestrating these secretive contests. However, if more people were aware of the heinous nature of these games, they might be exposed and eventually stopped. It is possible that in Season 3, Jun-ho will finally uncover the evidence he’s been seeking. Yet, exposing the truth could prove to be quite challenging given that the VIP participants are among the wealthiest and most influential individuals worldwide, having managed to evade justice for decades.
Regardless of whether Gi-hun reveals the truth about the games, it could make little difference because, as the Front Man suggests, the world outside might be just as ruthless. When confronted with reality, people often choose to ignore it, much like they ignored the homeless man in Season 1. The Front Man’s perspective is that if the world doesn’t change, the game will never truly end.
Indeed, let’s allow ourselves to imagine, isn’t that right? Despite the grim tone of this narrative suggesting an unlikely positive resolution, it would still represent a well-deserved triumph. Witnessing Jun-ho present evidence of the games in Season 3 and say “I was right all along” would undoubtedly be most fulfilling.
Gi-hun becoming the Front Man
In the potential third season of “Squid Game,” we’re hoping to explore the idea of Gi-hun potentially taking on the role of the Front Man, or at least seriously contemplating it. As we saw in Season 2, Gi-hun began demonstrating characteristics similar to the Front Man – manipulating others and making difficult decisions that resulted in sacrificing his fellow players for strategic purposes. However, in Season 3, this might progress as In-ho extends an offer to Gi-hun to become the Front Man. The chilling aspect is that by Season 3, Gi-hun might be so deeply entrenched in darkness that he could actually accept this offer.
Could it be possible for Gi-hun to assume the role of the Front Man in Season 3? This position might be thrust upon him by In-ho, forcing Gi-hun into a situation where he must decide who survives and who perishes (despite his reluctance). Alternatively, Gi-hun could choose this role willingly. He may become so disenchanted that he agrees with In-ho; the games are brutal, but they offer desperate individuals “one final opportunity to compete fairly and win,” as the Front Man explains. It’s plausible that this is exactly what the Front Man intended all along – to prepare Gi-hun to take over his position.
It’s significant to mention that during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae neither confirmed nor dismissed the idea that Gi-hun might become the Front Man. However, no matter what happens, it’s clear that in Season 3, Gi-hun will be forced to make a tough decision: either hold onto his belief in human kindness or adopt the perspective of the Front Man.
A chance at redemption for the Front Man
After In-ho’s betrayal of Gi-hun at the end of Season 2, it’s understandable to think that the Front Man is irredeemable. But remember, In-ho was once a player like Gi-Hun, and despite his actions in “Squid Game,” the Front Man has shown kindness. So, a change in his heart for the better in Season 3 isn’t entirely unrealistic.
The creator of “Squid Game,” Hwang Dong-hyuk, believes that although In-ho is trying to shake Gi-hun’s belief in human kindness, he still admires Gi-hun’s courage for reentering the games. Intrigued by Gi-hun’s actions, Hwang suggests that In-ho may secretly hope Gi-hun will prove him wrong. As In-ho watches Gi-hun, it seems he is reminded of what he has lost and what he let go. If Gi-hun manages to win against the Front Man and helps many players survive, this could potentially alter In-ho’s perspective.
On multiple occasions, Hwang has drawn parallels between the Front Man and Darth Vader, and it’s evident why – not only do they share a black mask and deep voice, but also their methods of manipulating Gi-hun, demonstrating what could happen if Gi-hun chose a darker path. In essence, just like Vader, the Front Man is tempting Gi-hun towards darkness by challenging him to see how far he can be pushed. Consequently, there’s a chance that, similar to Darth Vader, the Front Man may come to regret his actions and possibly even give up his own life to set things right.
Chekov’s bomb
In a narrative, every event serves a purpose. The principle of Chekhov’s gun suggests that if an author introduces an element like a bomb hidden behind a wall, it should eventually be triggered by the story’s end. Essentially, each setup ought to lead to a satisfying conclusion. In “Squid Game” Season 1, when Jun-ho is dressed as a pink guard, one of the organ harvesters reveals a concealed exit path for the VIPs. This secret passage is equipped with a bomb that these high-ranking individuals can detonate to erase any evidence of the games and make their escape unscathed.
As a devoted Squid Game fan, I ponder over an intriguing detail that some of us believe will eventually explode – a Chekhov’s gun, if you will. Reddit user u/Atlantic789 aptly pointed out that this plot point was set up in Season 1 but never had its payoff. The season ended without any mention of the bomb, leading many to speculate that the creators are holding onto it for a potential Season 2 resolution.
To my delight, we didn’t catch so much as a whisper about this bomb in Season 2, indicating that the writers have kept it under wraps for a future season – perhaps even Season 3. The climax of the games could be dramatically concluded if our hero, Gi-hun or Jun-ho, gets to pull the trigger on this long-awaited explosion. It would be quite fulfilling to see the games come to an end once and for all in such a manner.
More games around the world
One intriguing theory about “Squid Game” is that the contests we witness in the series might merely represent a small fraction of what exists globally. Since the VIP participants hail from various parts of the world to attend the Front Man’s games, it’s plausible that many more similar games are taking place worldwide. In Season 1, one of the VIPs remarks, “The Korean contest was the best,” hinting at other games happening outside Korea. Since the games depicted in “Squid Game” are traditional Korean children’s games, it’s likely that other countries have their own cultural versions of these games. Even if Gi-hun manages to halt the Korean games by the end of Season 3, it could be disheartening for him to realize that there might be countless similar games ongoing across the globe, leaving him with a sense of having only scratched the surface.
If the concept isn’t delved into during Season 3, there’s a possibility it could arise in future “Squid Game” spin-offs. Interestingly, director David Fincher has been rumored to be discussing a new project set within the “Squid Game” universe. This could potentially lead to a fresh series that focuses on games taking place in America, offering fans an opportunity to witness more tales from this world once Gi-hun’s story concludes.
