As a lifelong fan of science fiction and space exploration, I find myself utterly captivated by this intricate and imaginative article about the potential storylines for Stargate Universe Season 3. The sheer ingenuity of the writers to concoct such diverse scenarios is truly astounding.
For more than decade now, there’s been an unresolved cliffhanger looming over the closing events of Stargate Universe, ever since the beloved science fiction series signed off for good on an intriguingly open-ended note at the end of its second season.
The Destiny and its crew were on the brink of some intriguing developments in Season 2 of Stargate Universe. After spending their first season grappling with the Ancients’ unpredictable spaceship, dealing with internal conflicts among themselves, and even engaging in heated disputes, they began to receive answers.

Where was the Stargate Universe story headed when it ended?
The show Stargate Universe ended without providing clear indications of where the story might go next in its final episode, “Gauntlet,” which aired in 2011. With the decision to embark on a three-year journey through space via FTL (Faster Than Light), everyone aboard except for “Math Boy” Eli Wallace (David Blue) entered a state of deep-sleep stasis to conserve resources during the long voyage, initially set out to explore the ancient cosmic enigma that the Ancients originally designed Destiny for.
As the episode (and the series) concluded, it was just Eli who remained awake, ready to steer the crew’s daring plan. This left many unanswered questions about where the story of SGU might have gone had the show survived beyond its second season.
It’s important to note that the writers weren’t without ideas about where the story should progress – they had multiple options, in fact. Since the final episode of Stargate Universe aired, Joseph Mallozzi, the show’s writer and producer, has proposed no less than six distinct directions the series could have taken to address Destiny’s uncertain ending.
In 2022, Mallozzi shared on the Dial the Gate podcast (via GateWorld) that at the time, we believed there could be a third and concluding season. However, as we filmed this episode, we weren’t certain if we would return again. Regrettably, we didn’t get another season.
In honor of the series reaching its 15-year milestone, the fan site has recently put together a convenient list of all six potential Season 3 storylines conceived by Mallozzi – and as you’ll shortly discover, these ideas span from the expected (Eli resolves his pod issue and unites with the crew in stasis) to the utterly unexpected (an unprecedented alien race swoops in to rescue the day!).

Six ways that Stargate Universe could have sailed into Season 3
1 – Eli retires for the night: It seemed natural for Season 3 of SGU to continue from where Season 2 ended. Alone (or awake) with the task of repairing the final pod on the Destiny, Eli manages and joins the rest of the crew in sleep stasis. Upon their awakening, a significant amount of time has passed, but just how much remains unclear. Although the journey of Destiny into the void between galaxies was supposed to last approximately three years, hints have been dropped that the narrative could’ve come up with reasons for it to take significantly longer – perhaps even an entire millennium, which would undoubtedly alter the overall direction of the series.
2 – Commandeer a Shuttle: Eli, who was unable to fix his pod, devises an alternative plan. He decides to utilize the power source from Destiny’s final operational shuttle to keep the life support systems running during the voyage. Remaining awake and alone for the three-year journey through the void, he manages to avoid entering stasis.
3 — Shift to digital: Here’s an interesting twist: Eli ultimately uploads his consciousness into Destiny’s computer system, as he is unable to repair his pod or activate the life support using the shuttle. In this situation, his physical body would perish, but his mind would survive, giving the Destiny a virtual crew member, effectively keeping the otherwise dormant ship active.
4 — Earth Contact: In another development, the clever minds at Stargate Command on Earth are working on an ingenious long-distance plan while Eli and the Destiny continue their drifting journey without a permanent solution for the ship’s power issues. This plan might involve them figuring out a method to directly reach the Destiny through the Stargate, allowing a rescue team from Earth to travel through a nearby gate. The hope is that they could bring along something like a Zero Point Module or another powerful energy source to help the crew out of their predicament.
5 — Assistance from Future Generations: Things are getting quite intriguing now. One of Mallozzi’s more out-there concepts was to bring back descendants of the Destiny crew, hailing from a future where they’ve mastered advanced technology, which incidentally enables them to look back in time too. Their purpose? To prevent the doom that would have wiped out their timeline. However, it’s not all heartwarming homecomings; as Mallozzi mentioned on GateWorld, “They save us, but their intentions aren’t entirely noble, as it turns out they have plans for Destiny.” This scenario was my personal favorite because I found the idea of a human military force evolving into our season three ‘main antagonist’ to be incredibly plausible and exciting.
In this scenario, it appears that the authors didn’t have a specific alien race prepared for rescue operations. This hypothetical alien species, potentially new to the Stargate universe, would have come to revive the Destiny from its low-power state. A concept was considered about introducing a novel “energy-based” alien spacefarer, so advanced that it could make Eli believe he was experiencing hallucinations. As Mallozzi explained via GateWorld, “Eli begins seeing these entities and, after three years alone, he assumes he’s going mad and hallucinating. Eventually, the aliens communicate with him, and being energy-based, they can provide the power necessary for Destiny to complete its journey.
