Game development studios within Warner Bros. Studios’ gaming sector have undergone significant corporate closures, resulting in many employees losing their positions they worked hard to obtain. Among these affected companies is Monolith Studios, known for creating the cherished Shadow of Mordor series and the recently canceled Wonder Woman game.
The Mordor series was famous for its groundbreaking Nemesis System, which caught many gamers off guard when it first appeared. This system offered a distinctive method of fostering rivalries between players and the game’s AI. It created dynamic, procedurally generated main targets that had to be pursued. If one of these targets successfully defeated you, their standing would escalate, making them an even more formidable adversary the next time they crossed paths with you. Thus, the name “Nemesis” was born for such characters.
An innovative approach was taken to make AI enemies in the game feel like real characters with whom you could build a personal enmity – foes that allowed for the development of a lasting rivalry. I recall one specific Orc from Shadow of Mordor who was incredibly relentless; no matter how many times I defeated him, he would return. Even after I severed his head or limbs, he would resurface, boasting about having “evaded death.” It was amusing, and the social feuds created by the Nemesis System were what made it truly exceptional.
In other words, since Monolith has ceased operation, the Nemesis System is currently in a state of stasis or suspension.
In 2021, Warner Bros. obtained a patent for a unique game system, making it stand out from other widely recognized games. The patent safeguards distinctive elements like “nemesis characters”, “nemesis strongholds”, “social feuds”, and “followers” in video games.

In Monolith Studios’ forthcoming Wonder Woman game, we might have experienced a more impressive version of the Nemesis System, but unfortunately, Warner Bros.’ decision to close down the studio has left us guessing about what the potential Nemesis System for Wonder Woman could have offered.
Other games share similarities to this system, particularly Assassin’s Creed’s ‘Mercenaries’ mode; however, they fail to capture the unique character and allure of Shadow of Mordor’s chatty Orcs. Remarkably, they managed to implement a tiered system, albeit with a less convincing effort compared to their attempt.
Initially, Warner Bros. applied for the patent back in 2015; however, due to revisions and resubmissions required, the process took some time. Eventually, on February 23rd, 2021, their application was approved. This means that games similar to this system may not be released anytime soon since Warner Bros. holds exclusive rights to it until 2035 (provided they keep up with the required fees).
Under an optimistic scenario, a major studio might acquire the patent for their upcoming high-budget triple-A game. Given that Rocksteady is currently under Warner Bros., they could potentially utilize this system. This could lead to future Batman: Arkham games being developed with Monolith Studios’ unique Nemesis System.
