As a die-hard Yellowstone fan, I can hardly contain my excitement! The rumors about Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler getting their own spinoff series have me riding high like John Dutton himself on his prized horse. If these reports are true, it means we’ll get to see more of Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s electrifying performances that have captivated us since the series began.
Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler may not be riding off into the sunset just yet.
Discussions about extending Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” universe, starring the beloved duo from the show, played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, have been ongoing since this past summer. On a day preceding the finale of season 5B, several sources claim that these actors have sealed their contracts – not for another season, but for a separate spinoff series.
If the report is accurate, it functions as a potential spoiler for us – and sheds light on why no official confirmation has been made public so far (as Paramount Network remains silent on the matter).
Approaching this weekend’s thrilling end to the ongoing season, unexpected events may transpire. Knowing that a spinoff series featuring two prominent characters will continue the story could mislead viewers into thinking they will make it through the suspenseful finale for the Dutton family, which comprises Luke Grimes and Wes Bentley, as well.
According to executive producer and director Christina Voros, shared with THR last week, viewers will find the ending unexpected: “The entire narrative fits together perfectly when viewed retrospectively. However, if you were to predict it beforehand, you wouldn’t have guessed it. That’s the enchanting aspect of storytelling, and I believe Taylor has skillfully accomplished this with the finale.
Ever since star Kevin Costner left and it was revealed that season 5B would be the last of Yellowstone, everyone has been eagerly awaiting to see where the show’s co-creator, writer, and director would take his iconic Western series. Originally, season 5B had been announced as the final season back in May 2023. However, during the summer months, rumors arose that Reilly and Hauser were negotiating for another potential sixth season of Yellowstone.
Since my conversations with Reilly and Hauser, there’s been uncertainty regarding the future of our top-rated TV show. It remains undecided if the finale of season 5B, airing this coming Sunday, will mark the end of just this season or potentially the entire series.
Heading into this weekend’s major showdown, here’s what I’ve learned so far: As THR announced earlier midweek, Sheridan will be directing an extended “special season finale event” airing at 8 p.m. on Paramount Network. The December 15th episode, penned by Sheridan himself, is set to be lengthy – running for a full hour and 26 minutes – and bears the title, “Life Is A Promise.” The plot synopsis suggests that the future of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch will be unveiled.
Reilly and Hauser are eager to stay along with Sheridan, the writer of the hit series Yellowstone, as his writing journey unfolds. “Taylor has the ability to keep things going if he chooses to,” Hauser said at the start of this season, speaking to THR. Reilly concurred, saying, “It’s up to him. We have faith in him. He’s a skilled storyteller, and we assist him in telling these characters’ tales. It’s been an exhilarating ride, both on-screen and off, and I trust his decisions about where he leads the story; whether we’ll find the character in the same place or somewhere new, I have faith in him.
Coming up next within the broader “Yellowstone” universe is the second season of the prequel series titled “1923,” which resumes on February 23 and features Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Brandon Sklenar as an older generation of the Dutton family, who are ancestors to the present-day Duttons seen in “Yellowstone.
1923 picked up with the succeeding Dutton family members following the incidents in the first prequel series, 1883. It concluded with a suspenseful ending back in February 2023. The story of 1923 centered around Sklenar’s character Spencer Dutton, a significant Dutton elder, who had to go back to Montana to protect the Yellowstone ranch of the Dutton family from impending dangers. It is possible that he may be the grandfather to Costner’s John Dutton.
Additionally, we have “The Madison,” starring Michelle Pfeiffer, set to debut as part of the trio of upcoming spinoffs. At this point, a release date for the show remains undisclosed.
Originally envisioned as a follow-up series to Yellowstone, titled “2024,” The Madison has evolved into a contemporary spinoff set post-events from Yellowstone. Here’s what we now understand: The series delves deeper into the Dutton family dynasty, introducing new characters and settings while revisiting some familiar faces. The Madison is described as an emotional exploration of grief and human connection, focusing on a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana. In addition to Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Beau Garrett, Ben Schnetzer, and Amiah Miller, the series also features this family.
Additionally, there’s a third spinoff series in development, which could serve as another prequel. This potential series is set in the year 1944 and appears to continue the narrative started by both 1883 and 1923. However, specific details about this one remain limited.
To sum up, regardless of what unfolds this coming Sunday, it’s clear that the world of Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” is forging ahead at a rapid pace. Tune in to Paramount Network this Sunday at 8 p.m. for the season 5B finale of “Yellowstone”. (Here’s where you can stream “Yellowstone” if you prefer online viewing.)
