When 18-year old Sushmita Sen was asked by parents to not use ‘sex’ during interviews: ‘I purposely brought up the word’

As a dedicated fan of Sushmita Sen, I have always admired her strength and unapologetic nature. Her journey to becoming the first Miss Universe for India is nothing short of inspiring. However, it seems that her personal life experiences were not as smooth sailing.

Sushmita Sen is a captivating figure to behold. Following her historic win as the first Indian Miss Universe in 1994, she has become an influential icon. Her impressive acting career includes roles in critically-acclaimed films. In her private life, the actress defied conventions by adopting two young daughters, Renee and Alisah.

Although the actress encountered equal difficulties, she didn’t have it any simpler. Instead, she dealt with her own set of challenges as she shared in a recent conversation.

Sushmita Sen recalls her parents questioned her use of the word “s*x” in interviews

During an interview with Rhea Chakraborty on her YouTube channel, Sushmita Sen shared stories about the challenges she faced in staying true to herself in the past. In the ’90s, a less tolerant society criticized her for speaking openly. Her parents also advised caution and raised concerns over her use of certain words like “sex.”

In older times, society wasn’t as accepting as it is now. Things were much more restrictive, to the point that my parents had to caution me, “Your future depends on your actions and words. At 18, why bring up such topics in an interview? Shobhaa De is criticizing you harshly for it.”

An actress spoke about how De’s name being brought up particularly resonated with her since she is Bengali and often perceived as intelligent. This meant that the intellectually-charged articles were causing concern for her parents, rather than the scandalous gossip pieces.

Sushmita Sen reveals she then used the word “s*x” intentionally in the interviews

As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but marvel at Sen’s bold confession. She admittedly used the term “sex” deliberately to challenge societal taboos and push boundaries.

She intentionally raised the topic, explaining that her goal wasn’t to become “Miss Universe” or the most beautiful person. Instead, I wanted to be a liberated individual, unafraid and truly free. In my pursuit of this freedom, I became India’s first Miss Universe. It was this newfound liberty that enabled me to achieve this title. However, once I won, many expected much from me and tried to restrict my freedom.

On the work front, Sushmita was last seen in Disney + Hotstar.
