When 40-year-old R Madhavan felt uneasy playing student in Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots, you won’t believe what gave him confidence

Most recently, R. Madhavan garnered praise for his stellar acting in Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story Of Jallianwala Bagh, starring Akshay Kumar. Coming up next, he will appear in Karan Johar’s romantic drama Aap Jaisa Koi, where he assumes the role of a 48-year-old character. In an open conversation, the actor shared his thoughts on age-suitable roles and reminisced about his discomfort playing an 18-year-old college student in 3 Idiots when he was forty. Interestingly, seeing bald and grey-haired college students during the film’s production helped increase his confidence.

In an interview with News 18, R. Madhavan spoke about playing a college student in Rajkumar Hirani’s film “3 Idiots,” even though he was 40 years old at the time. He admitted that he felt uncomfortable because it was hard for him to convincingly portray a character that was much younger than himself.

Nevertheless, he disclosed an unexpected event that significantly increased his self-assurance. In fact, the actor from 3 Idiots revealed that during a filming session at their alma mater, they discovered to their astonishment that they appeared more youthful than the actual students on campus.

I’m thrilled to share that luckily, Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, and I weren’t sporting any bald spots or grey hair. Instead, it was the college students who were either bald or had grey hair! We couldn’t help but wonder if they were professors instead. But when they confirmed they were students, we felt a breath of fresh air, ‘What fantastic news, brother! Now we feel like youngsters once again!’

In Karan Johar’s film “Aap Jaisa Koi,” starring R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh, the plot centers around a 48-year-old Sanskrit professor falling in love with a 28-year-old French professor. He mentioned that he took on this project because he was given a role fitting his age.

In a candid conversation, the actor from Kesari 2 expressed his preference for portraying roles that are nearer to his actual age. He finds it awkward or uncomfortable to act out characters that seem younger than himself.

Madhavan shared that Aap Jaisa Koi explores whether romantic relationships with significant age differences are reasonable and lasting, as well as the intricacies involved. Regarding Hollywood, he noted they’re shying away from casting older actors for younger roles due to these portrayals appearing awkward and inappropriate nowadays.
